You’ll Stop Comparing ‘Attack on Titan’ to ‘Vinland Saga’ After Watching ‘Orb: On the Movements of the Earth’

Attack on Titan and Vinland Saga are two of the most popular seinen series in the history of the anime industry. As such, frequent comparisons between them aren’t really unheard of.

Especially since both shows depict a storyline rife with battles, betrayal, despair and the ultimate test of the human will in a world of adversaries. However, there is another series that’s making the rounds these days that’s making people take a second look. That is, of course, Orb: On the Movements of the Earth.

Interestingly, if the reviews are anything to go by, it is evident that it’s not Attack on Titan that should be compared with Vinland Saga, but Orb: On the Movements of the Earth.

Orb: On the Movements of the Earth proved that Vinland Saga’s comparison should be with this show and not Attack on Titan.

Orb: On the Movements of the Earth finally concluded this March after a 25-episode run that began in October 2024. Interestingly, with its conclusion, the show cemented in people’s minds why if there’s any other seinen anime that should be compared to Vinland Saga, it’s Orb: On the Movements of the Earth, and not Attack on Titan.

One of the major reasons behind it is that both shows take place in a period setting in the real world, whereas Attack on Titan although shares the historical premise aspect, is set entirely in a fictional place where fantastical monsters run amok.

In Vinland Saga and Orb, the biggest threat to humans is other humans who don’t hesitate to commit heinous crimes after being led astray by their misguided sense of faith. In fact, both shows also feature a journey of exploration, whether to better, more sustainable lands or of truth that might shake the very base of society.

Inevitably, the explorers face severe pushback, whether in the form of slavery or in the form of being labeled as heretics and facing execution. The biggest similarity between Vinland Saga and Orb, though, is that the protagonists are based on real historical figures that graced the Earth a long time ago.

In Vinland Saga, it is Thorfinn Karlsefni and his journey to find the rumored Vinland while gaining experiences that ultimately change him from a vengeful youth to a man of peace who tries to do his best for the people around him.

While in the case of Orb: On the Movements of the Earth, it is Albert Brudzewski, a Polish astronomer and mathematician from the 15th century, who was an important figure in the study of Heliocentrism and the teacher of Copernicus. While both series depict a dramatized tale of their lives with plenty of fiction added to make the story appealing, the inspiration for Thorfinn and Albert is unignorable in the shows.

On the other hand, even though Hajime Isayama’s story seems to share the journey to uncover the truth of that universe in common with Vinland Saga, it lacks the other similarities that Orb shares with the series.

As such, it would be far more pertinent to draw comparisons between Vinland Saga and Orb: On the Movements of the Earth, than dragging Attack on Titan into the mix.

Fans compare Vinland Saga and Orb: On the Movements of the Earth due to their apparent similarities

Historical fiction can be quite hard to shape into a gripping tale that intrigues fans to the point of staying hooked to the series for a long time. Especially, if the series wants to stay loyal to the source material without making abrupt changes that take the fiction further away from history.

However, both Vinland Saga and Orb: On the Movements of the Earth have managed to do exactly that, and fans couldn’t be happier about it.

Although Vinland Saga concluded its Season 2, a Season 3 is already in the works. Although it might take some time to hit the screens as per Games Radar+, fans are excited about it all the same. Orb: On the Movements of the Earth, on the other hand, covered the entire manga in 25 episodes.

As such, there are no hopes of the story progressing any further. Attack on Titan, too, finished its journey in November 2023. As such, the only way for a revival would have to be in the shape of a spin-off series.

Attack on Titan, Vinland Saga, and Orb: On the Movements of the Earth are all streaming on Crunchyroll.
