With Nintendo Cracking Down on Emulation, Hideki Kamiya’s Request of Having “the Virtual Console rebooted” Could Finally Come True

Nintendo has been long at war against emulation of its games, even pursuing countless legal battles, whether it be against a group or just an individual trying to keep the legacy of the studio’s old franchises alive.

It’s obvious how the company wants full control over its classic library. However, while this aggressive push happens, Hideki Kamiya’s wish for a Virtual Console revival might be closer to reality than ever before, especially with the Switch 2’s release coming closer than ever.

No matter if it’s illegal or not, Nintendo has grown infamous for just sending out legal strikes to anybody who dares touch the studio’s library and try to emulate it. The lawsuits discriminate against nobody, not any individual, and certainly not against any ROM-distributing website.

Talking about the company’s latest project, the upcoming Switch 2, Hideki Kamiya, a famous Japanese director, stated the following in an interview via IGN, revealing his opinions on the upcoming handheld console.

As a personal comment, I personally would love to see the Virtual Console rebooted. That’s something that I would really want to ask Nintendo for.

The director Hideki Kamiya, co-creator of Bayonetta and Devil May Cry, has now publicly revealed how he roots for the return of the virtual console. While he was not able to say much about the Switch 2 console, we now know at least someone significant is out there rooting for the return of one of the company’s best products ever.

The Nintendo Switch Online service provides access to select classic titles, but its catalog is far from complete and lacks a lot of classics that players might want to experience one more time.

The Virtual Console was essentially a digital service that allowed players to purchase and download classic games from older Nintendo systems and select third-party consoles. It was made available to a variety of consoles throughout the years, including Wii, Wii U, and the 3DS.

It ultimately allowed users to play old titles on modern hardware, acting as an official gateway to emulation for die-hard fans. With the studio cracking down hard on every other emulator out there, fans believe it is about time the virtual console is revived from the dead and brought back as a final solution
