Why Didn’t John Cena Use ‘Dr. of Thuganomics’ Persona for His Heel Return?

Combat sports fans all over the world expected John Cena to use the ‘Dr of Thuganomics’ persona for his heel turn, but little did they know, Cena and Triple H had other plans.

Triple H’s reign has been full of surprises and John Cena’s heel turn was no exception. Fans expected Cena to have a new presentation and appearance after turning villain but he did the unexpected and turned evil in his same old babyface appearance.

Why didn’t WWE and John Cena choose to bring back his famous ‘Dr of Thuganomics’ persona?

When John Cena got his first breakthrough in the WWE and was called up to the promotion’s main roaster, he took on a new persona: Dr. Thuganomics. Cena dressed as a white rapper and often showcased his rapping skills before matches. He also had a penchant for backward baseball caps and jersey combos.

It was expected that WWE would follow its pattern and give Cena a new presentation and appearance which many thought would be Dr of Thuganomics. But John Cena clarified that he is not just another babyface turned heel.

WWE might have not been interested in relaunching Cena’s Dr of Thuganomics avatar because it could have resulted in a massive controversy in today’s society. That avatar was perfect for its time and gave Cena the push he needed but bringing it back again would have represented regression rather than progress.

Since taking over WWE Triple H has been unpredictable and that’s what the fans love the most about him. On the recent episode of RAW Cena appeared with the same babyface attire and presentation but his words were not the same anymore.

Despite appearing in his known outfit fans showered him with hate and that’s exactly what he wanted. Cena showed the world that he could pull off the heel turn excellently even without changing his presentation and appearance.

WWE took a risk and opted to not go for their traditional practice of changing a wrestler’s appearance and presentation after a major heel turn and Cena did not disappoint. He did an amazing job planting hate in everybody’s minds without any additional change.

Cena blamed his fans for treating him as their toy for 25 years, he claimed he had done everything to win them over but they only appreciated him when he won.

Cena’s heel turn has been going exactly how Triple H planned it and the fans couldn’t get any more excited about it. It is to be seen what more the WWE has in store for us and how one of the greatest wrestlers to ever grace the ring will pull the curtains on his show.
