Progression systems are a staple in many modern multiplayer games, and they are in Marvel Rivals, too. In NetEase Games’ new hit hero-shooter, every character has a Proficiency system that tracks how much time you’ve spent playing as them. If you really like any particular character, you’ll want to max it out to flex your progress.

As you play, you’ll complete challenges that contribute to your proficiency rank. There are exclusive rewards for progressing, such as sprays, kill notifications, and of course, our favorite Lord icon. But the proficiency system isn’t just about time played. So let’s look at what proficiency is and the best ways to increase it
Proficiency in Marvel Rivals, explained

Proficiency in Marvel Rivals represents how much a player has used a specific hero. Unlike a ranked system, it doesn’t necessarily reflect skill, but rather playtime and objective completion. You can check your current proficiency level for any character by going to their profile in the Heroes menu and checking the Proficiency tab.

In the Proficiency menu, you’ll see a progress bar, current rank, and the rewards available at each level. There are five proficiency levels in the game: Agent, Knight, Captain, Centurion, and Lord. Each level needs more points than the last and that’s where the grind comes in. Maybe we’ll get more rewards in the future.
Players start at Agent and gradually work their way up by completing challenges that align with their hero’s role. The rewards for increasing proficiency include cosmetic items such as sprays, kill notifications, and the highly sought-after Lord Icon, which signifies the highest level of hero mastery.
How to increase Proficiency in Marvel Rivals

Earning Proficiency happens naturally as players use a hero, but there are ways to optimize it a bit. As we know, every hero has four specific Proficiency challenges for leveling up. There is one challenge that is universal across all characters and it’s the one that requires you to play the character for an hour. The other three challenges vary based on the hero’s role:
- Duelists (damage dealers) progress by dealing damage and landing final hits.
- Vanguards (tanks) earn points by blocking damage and getting eliminations.
- Strategists (support) gain Proficiency by healing teammates and assisting in kills.
Competitive mode is the best game mode for farming proficiency since matches are longer, which means you’ll have more time to complete challenges. The main tip to progress faster is to really just spam your favorite character and remember exactly what the challenge needs you to do.
