“We were out of necessity cannibalistic”: Guillermo del Toro Knows Why We Love Vampires and I Can’t Wait for His George R.R. Martin Adaptation Now

Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro is known for his unique takes on classic folklore monsters. The Academy Award-winning director was recently revealed to be in talks to adapt George R. R. Martin’s Fevre Dream novel, exploring the wildly popular subgenre of vampire fiction, which has remained popular for decades.

In the past, del Toro revealed his love for vampires and explained what he enjoys about the creatures of the night. As someone who has been a fan of the subgenre, a Fevre Dream adaptation from del Toro is extremely enticing, especially after reading the director’s thoughts. Here is why I cannot wait for del Toro to adapt the George R. R. Martin novel.

Guillermo del Toro explained why we love vampires

Guillermo del Toro established himself as one of the finest directors in the horror genre starting with indie films in his native Mexico during the early 1990s. The director eventually won an Oscar for his work on the fantasy romance film The Shape of Water.

Del Toro has often been vocal about his love for creatures and monsters of all kinds. In an op-ed for The New York Times, del Toro shared his thoughts on why vampires have remained relevant in horror and gothic fiction for several decades.

The vampire may originate from a repressed memory we had as primates. Perhaps at some point we were — out of necessity — cannibalistic.

Del Toro wrote the above comment, discussing the origin of the vampire myth, and arguing how it was intrinsically linked to human evolution.

As a result, the myth has continued to grow and evolve over the past few centuries. Del Toro also explained that the myth’s longevity stemmed from the fact that, unlike other mythical monsters, vampires symbolized the eternal aspects of being human.

Guillermo del Toro hopes to adapt George R. R. Martin’s Fevre Dream

From del Toro’s words, it is perfectly evident that the director not only understands the significance of the vampire myth but also knows about its evolution in fiction. Therefore, I am convinced del Toro understands what we love about vampires and finds them compelling as characters.

After del Toro’s comments, I am convinced that the director is the perfect choice to helm an adaptation of George R. R. Martin‘s 1982 vampire novel Fevre Dream. In a recent interview with WinterisComing, Martin spoke about meeting del Toro to discuss an adaptation of the novel.

I’ve had meetings with Guillermo del Toro about Fevre Dream. He loves it, he says he wants to do it…but he doesn’t want to do it now.

Martin made the above statement, adding that the adaptation was still a long way from materializing because of del Toro’s other commitments.

Martin’s 1982 novel is described as a cross between Bram Stoker and Mark Twain. It follows the story of struggling riverboat captain Abner Marsh who partners with a wealthy aristocrat despite a strange secret. The novel has been praised for its use of classic vampire tropes and subversion, which makes it already interesting. As a result, I cannot wait for del Toro to adapt Martin’s novel into a feature film.
