Renowned investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has defended President John Mahama’s decision to appoint COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the new Inspector-General of Police (IGP), replacing Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.
In a statement, Manasseh argued that a sitting president must have the freedom to choose security leaders he trusts.
He dismissed calls by some, including policy think tank IMANI Africa, to retain Dampare, stating that security appointments should not be dictated by public sentiment or partisan influence.
“In security matters at the highest level, a lot goes into choosing the head. Until we agree on a non-partisan means of selecting our security chiefs, we should not force one president to work with the security chiefs chosen by his political opponents,” he stated.
Manasseh also referenced Ghana’s history, highlighting how top security officials have played critical roles in coups and political instability.
He noted that positions such as IGP and military chiefs are highly sensitive and require individuals in whom the president has full confidence.
“President Mahama has sworn to keep us safe. We should allow him to choose the men and women he trusts to do the job, and we can hold him accountable,” he added.
