We are running a lean and efficient government – Agbana

Hon. Eric Edem Agbana has defended the government’s decision to run a lean administration, stating that President John Mahama is committed to efficiency over numbers.

“President Mahama promised to run the government with not more than sixty ministers, and we have stayed true to that commitment,” Agbana stated in an interview on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana.

He contrasted this with the previous administration’s approach, arguing that excessive appointments did not translate into effective governance.

“At one point, they had 126 ministers. When Ghanaians complained, they reduced it to 88. But even with that, what did they achieve? It is clear that you don’t need large numbers to run an effective government—you need quality.”

He also highlighted the significant reduction in presidential staffers. “Under President Akufo-Addo, there were 391 presidential staffers appointed directly by the president, with over 1,800 workers at the presidency.

“Today, President Mahama has appointed only 30 political staffers and has promised to keep the numbers significantly lower.”

Addressing concerns about budgetary allocations to the presidency, Agbana dismissed claims that excessive funds were being channeled there.

“When we talk about the Office of the President in budgetary terms, we are not referring to just President Mahama’s office.

This budget includes all agencies that were previously under ministries that have now been scrapped. For example, the Ministry of Information no longer exists, and its agencies are now under the Office of the President.”
