WB Montreal’s Worst Mistake Was Scrapping Arkham Sequel Featuring Damian Wayne for Gotham Knights

The Batman: Arkham franchise is still considered one of the best series in the entire gaming industry. The games accurately depict the famous superhero, Batman, and make the players truly feel like the Dark Knight himself. All the Arkham games have been a treat to play, but Warner Bros. truly fumbled on this one game from 2022. Of course, we are talking about Gotham Knights.

Gotham Knights is sincerely underwhelming, and Warner Bros. really fumbled the bag on this one. Instead of delivering an Arkham Knight sequel, they released the most disappointing extension in the whole franchise. Let’s delve deeper into what could’ve been the best Arkham installment in the whole series.

Gotham Knights is a disappointing successor by Warner Bros.

Gotham Knights is a cooperative action adventure RPG game developed by WB Games Montreal. While the title features a rather interesting storyline, the gameplay is what has been a let down since the beginning. The game is riddled with bugs and performance issues that make the overall experience of playing the title a nightmare.

Before the release of Gotham Knights, the team behind the game was actually working on a sequel to Batman: Arkham Knight, which would’ve starred the infamous son of Batman, Damien Wayne, and Bruce Wayne himself as the mentor. The game was scrapped even before it went into full production, but concept art for the game shows that it could’ve been an awesome sequel to the series.

Free Range Games’ senior character artist, Rodrigue Pralier, posted on Artstation about a cancelled project from 2015, where the pictures depicted characters from the Gotham universe. The photos consisted of Damien Wayne, old man Bruce Wayne, Killer Croc, and the Huntress, suggesting a darker and more mature take on the Bat-family’s future.

Had WB Games Montreal moved forward with the Damien Wayne game, it could have been a natural continuation of the Arkham story. Instead, they abandoned that vision in favor of Gotham Knights, which inevitably failed to capture the depth, intensity, and polish of the entire Arkham series.

The cancelled project by WB Montreal could have been a bold new chapter in the Arkham series, but instead of that, we got a mediocre spin-off that failed to live up to the expectations. The fact that the developers scrapped the sequel of one of the best franchises for Gotham Knights is still a huge mystery people want the answer to.

The Damien Wayne game could have expanded on the world of Arkham while staying true to the legacy of Batman in the game. Although Warner Bros. is returning with a new Arkham game, we can’t help but speculate about what could’ve been instead of Gotham Knights.
