In other words, the series is yet to expand on the lore and origins of the devil fruit abilities. This has especially to do with Vegapunk’s theory which gave us a glimpse of the past. The intention and will birthed the fruits but does that make the Straw Hat’s ability, primordial? Let’s find out.

Vegapunk’s theory unfurls origins and lore

Almost every Shonen series has its version of a genius scientist and Dr. Vegapunk is no exception. He appears during the Egghead Arc where he subsequently becomes an ally to the Straw Hat pirates. It is also during this arc that he unfurls the origins of the devil fruit abilities.

For starters, one who consumes the fruit gains immeasurable power. Be it physical strength, knowledge, or the ability to shift and maneuver time, the powers are daunting nonetheless. But with every power comes responsibilities as well as drawbacks.

The Devil Fruit users gain intimidating strength but their weakness lies in water. Most cannot swim and get weakened if they are exposed to water. This is deemed as a curse throughout the series. It is said that they are hated by the sea but the origins of these powers have an interesting theory to it.

Vegapunk stated that the fruits originated as a result of desire and strong emotions. The thirst and ambition for power and control take center stage in Eiichiro Oda’s series. World Government and the Marines are a perfect example of that.

And while greed, tyranny, and violence persist, there are counters to that as well. There are protectors and harbingers of hope and healing as seen with Luffy and his abilities. It could also mean that Hito Hito no Mi is possibly the primordial fruit in the series.

Is Luffy’s Devil Fruit primordial in One Piece?

Gomu Gomu no mi being Hito Hito no mi is one of the shocking revelations in the One Piece series. Who would’ve thought our rubber man to be a God in disguise? We can relate to Sanji’s expression when Vegapunk reveals the straw Hats’ ability.

There is no mention of Nika’s ability in the Devil Fruit encyclopedia as the scientist mentioned. It is also because of the World Government’s involvement in erasing past and history which ties in well with the fruit’s origins. But is it one of the primordial Devil Fruit abilities in the series? Let’s find out.

Nika, as we all know, existed before Joyboy and he is the Sun God worshipped by the people of Elbaph. His powers were passed down to Joyboy who possibly could have fought Imu. Both figures are representative of freedom and liberation from tyranny but that is not all.

The shrouded figure is said to have existed during the void century which puts him on par with Joyboy’s abilities. Both represent conflicting views; one represents power and authority while the other is symbolic of humanity and compassion which makes one thing certain.

By the look of it, it is possible that Hito Hito no Mi could be the first ability existing in time along with Imu’s power. However, it is all but a theory as none of it has been confirmed as of yet.

One Piece is available for streaming on Crunchyroll. The manga is available for reading on Shueisha’s Manga Plus app.
