The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued a warning regarding Tropical Storm Danas, which is intensifying the monsoon over Thailand.
Weather forecasts predict heavy rainfall across 38 provinces tomorrow. As of 5pm yesterday, July 5, the TMD announced the sixth warning on Tropical Storm Danas, located in the northern South China Sea at latitude 20.6°N and longitude 117.7°E, with maximum wind speeds near the centre at approximately 83 kilometres per hour.
The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has cautioned 33 provinces across four regions to prepare for potential flooding, flash floods, and landslides from July 6 to 12. Current weather conditions indicate heavy rain in three regions, affecting 42 provinces, with Bangkok experiencing a 70% chance of rainfall.
The storm is nearly stationary and is expected to approach Taiwan between July 7 and 9, without directly affecting Thailand’s weather. However, it will strengthen the southwest monsoon covering the country. This announcement was made at 5pm yesterday, July 5, with a follow-up expected at 11pm the same day.
The weather forecast today, July 6, predicts heavy rainfall in eastern regions, with some areas experiencing very heavy rain. The northern, upper northeastern, and southern regions will also see significant rainfall.
Residents in these regions are advised to be cautious of heavy and accumulated rain, which could lead to flash floods and overflowing rivers, particularly in foothill areas and low-lying regions. This is due to a low-pressure system over northern Vietnam combined with a moderate southwest monsoon affecting the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand.
Weather forecast
Sea conditions in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand are moderate, with waves in the upper Andaman Sea reaching around 2 metres and 1 to 2 metres in the lower Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf. Thunderstorm areas could see waves exceeding 2 metres. Mariners in these areas are advised to navigate carefully and avoid sailing in stormy regions.
For the northern region, thunderstorms are expected in 60% of the area, with heavy rain in provinces like Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, and Chiang Rai. Temperatures will range from 23 to 34 degrees Celsius, with southwest winds at speeds of 10 to 20 kilometres per hour.
The northeastern region will see thunderstorms in 70% of the area, with heavy rain in provinces such as Loei and Nong Khai. Temperatures here are expected to be between 23 and 34 degrees Celsius, with similar wind conditions.
In the central region, 60% will experience thunderstorms, particularly in provinces like Nakhon Sawan and Uthai Thani, with temperatures between 24 and 35 degrees Celsius.
The eastern region will also see 60% coverage of thunderstorms and very heavy rain in provinces such as Nakhon Nayok and Prachin Buri, with temperatures from 25 to 34 degrees Celsius. The seas here will have waves of 1 to 2 metres, exceeding 2 metres in thunderstorms.
The southern (east coast) will have storms in 40% of the area, mainly in provinces like Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan, with temperatures from 23 to 35 degrees Celsius. Sea waves will be around 1 metre, rising to 2 metres offshore in thunderstorms.
The southern (west coast) will see storms in 60% of the area, with heavy rain in provinces like Ranong and Phang Nga, and temperatures from 24 to 34 degrees Celsius. Waves will be about 2 metres, exceeding 2 metres in thunderstorms, reported KhaoSod.
Bangkok and surrounding areas will experience thunderstorms in 70% of the area, with temperatures ranging from 26 to 35 degrees Celsius under southwest winds of 10 to 20 kilometres per hour.
