Traumatic Past That Led J.K. Rowling to Support Trans Women: “They’re most likely to be killed by s*xual partners”

Despite earning global fame for her Harry Potter novels and franchise, J.K. Rowling has been at the center of controversy for years—often accused of being transphobic. But is that really the case? Many people assume she’s against all transgender individuals. However, reality seems more complex.

The globally renowned author has made it clear that she supports trans women who have undergone medical transitions. However, what she opposes is the idea that any man can simply declare himself a woman and gain access to women’s spaces without question. In a heartfelt letter on her website, Rowling thus opened up about her abusive first marriage, revealing how her past shaped her views.

J.K. Rowling’s support for trans women is rooted in her abusive past

Harry Potter writer J.K. Rowling is no stranger to controversies when it comes to gender issues. For years, the author has been labeled as transphobic for her controversial views, while only a few people took the time to understand the root of her opinions. In a deeply personal letter on her website, Rowling thus reflected on her abusive past and noted how her traumatic experience shaped her perspective on gender identity and women’s rights.

Opening up about the horrors she endured in her first marriage—trapped in a physically and emotionally abusive relationship—J.K. Rowling admitted struggling to protect both herself and her daughter. Thereafter, the author mentioned how this personal history made her deeply aware of the dangers women can face—especially from their intimate partners. And well, that’s what began her journey to advocate for cis as well as trans women’s rights.

I managed to escape my first violent marriage with some difficulty… However, the scars left by violence and s*xual assault don’t disappear, no matter how loved you are, and no matter how much money you’ve made.

If you could come inside my head and understand what I feel when I read about a trans woman dying at the hands of a violent man, you’d find solidarity and kinship… Trans people need and deserve protection. Like women, they’re most likely to be killed by s*xual partners.

After admitting how trans women, much like natal women, are the most vulnerable groups when it comes to domestic violence and intimate partner homicide, J.K. Rowling reflected on her desire for “trans women to be safe”. Because of this, Rowling has been vocal about supporting trans women who have undergone medical and hormonal transitions. She believes they deserve protection just like cisgender women. However, her views become controversial when it comes to self-identification.

J.K. Rowling claimed to be triggered by controversial gender recognition

For years, while J.K. Rowling has openly supported transgender women—who have undergone the lengthy process of surgical and hormonal transitions—the author has openly noted her issue with self-ID laws. It’s the way gender identity is being redefined in modern society that has repeatedly triggered Rowling. In her view, this could create loopholes that put both trans and cis women at risk.

She has often referred to her own past trauma, explaining that as a survivor of domestic abuse, she is deeply sensitive to the idea of men infiltrating women’s spaces without any legal or medical obligations. When laws don’t require a medical transition for gender recognition, J.K. Rowling claimed to fear the idea of how predatory men could take advantage of these rules.

When you throw open the doors of bathrooms and changing rooms to any man who believes or feels he’s a woman – and, as I’ve said, gender confirmation certificates may now be granted without any need for surgery or hormones – then you open the door to any and all men who wish to come inside. That is the simple truth.

Ground down by the relentless attacks from trans activists on social media… I spent much of Saturday in a very dark place inside my head, as memories of a serious s*xual assault I suffered in my twenties recurred on a loop. That assault happened at a time and in a space where I was vulnerable, and a man capitalized on an opportunity.

Reflecting on how her opinions on self-identity laws have sparked outrage on social media, J.K. Rowling mentioned getting triggered by her own past and assaults. However, battling criticism and backlash from trans activists who argue that self-identification is a fundamental right, the author insisted that her views aren’t about excluding trans people—they’re about protecting women—both cis and trans.
