Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is one of the most popular anime series in recent years, and rightfully so. The series initially came off as a fantastical tale of the mage protagonist’s life with humor and adventure to fuel the plot.

However, it quickly became evident that the storyline delved into far deeper waters than that. Of course, Frieren was at the center of it all. However, one thing that has fascinated fans about her throughout is understandably her powers.
Hailed as the strongest of her era, she has proven her worth many times with magnificent shows of magic during battle. Interestingly, what many fans might not realize, though, is what makes her strongest is time. However, not in the way one would expect.
The secret to Frieren’s power is one of the building blocks of her character
As stated above, one of the major attractions of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, has been witnessing Frieren’s mesmerizing magic at work. Seeing her work her charm on screen leaves no one wondering why she is hailed as the strongest mage of her time. However, the secret to her skills might not be exactly what people might think it to be.
While many might think that simply living for so long and getting time to hone one’s skills enables a practitioner to wield unimaginable power in anime, the truth is quite contrary. Fans are aware of just how quickly magic changes in the show’s world.
In fact, it sometimes changes multiple times in just a century. This forces the mages to adapt to these changes as soon as possible. The reason behind that is even if you master a spell to its ultimate level, once the shift happens it can become useless.
For example, many of the spells that are used on a regular basis these days might have been enough to stop the most powerful mages in their tracks up until a century ago. Although there are a few exceptions to this rule, it mostly stands true.
This is exactly what the protagonist has managed to master, i.e., being adaptable. For starters, it helps her to assess a situation objectively and figure out which spell would work best in a battle.
Moreover, her adaptability has also helped her hone her skills to the point where she can combine two spells to create something new when the situation calls for it. This is why she tries to keep things simple and stick to basics as much as possible.
Fans comment on time and the adaptability it requires in Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End
As stated above, magic changes every few years in Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End. Although a few spells still hold their valor in the modern era, there are many that have become so widespread that they would stun the mages of the past to no end.

Commenting on the same, a fan pointed out during a discussion on the r/Frieren subreddit that “magic now must be so much strong compared to the time of Flamme.”
Another one pointed out the growth she has had as a person throughout the series stating that, she “recognizes this too and the potential of humans to adapt and make new magic and variations on magic.”As things stand, most fans seem to be of a similar mind.
So a hundred years ago Frieren couldn’t even cast Zoltraak or counter it?
