Celebrities being admired by their fans who track their every move online is nothing new, but when this parasocial relationship turns into a real-life obsession and takes the form of stalking, things become serious. Jason Isaacs’ stalking nightmare reportedly began in 1998 and lasted for almost a decade (via Independent).

During this period, he was being relentlessly pursued by a young woman, who would show up at his home uninvited, send him letters, and invade his personal space. Isaacs never met her but he was certainly the target of her obsession, which could turn out to be dangerous, possibly putting his life at risk.

“I was terrified my house would be burned down or I’d be stabbed,” he revealed in an interview with The i Paper. It affected him to a level that he went “mad,” and it was so intense that he could have easily written a movie about it.

Despite the threat being so real, the police failed him and didn’t think of it as anything serious “because it was a young woman.” The situation only escalated when his stalker was arrested outside his home, but then she was immediately released and reappeared at the front door.

Moreover, the actor also revealed how the police suggested some “insane” things, from changing his name and even occupation to escape her. But the most shocking thing was their assumption that Jason Isaacs must have had a romantic relationship with the stalker, “They kept insisting I must have had an affair with her. And I’d never met her.”

But despite facing this trauma, Isaacs has continued to thrive in his career and is being praised for his portrayal of Timothy Ratliff, a businessman, in The White Lotus. Recently he’s been under fire for making controversial comments about nudity, but now the actor has backtracked on his word and clarified that he didn’t mean to use the phrase, “double standard.” (via Variety)

His earlier comments were meant to dodge the question of whether he used prosthetics in a nude scene. He deflected by saying that no one in the industry would dare ask about a woman’s genitalia. However, he now has the realization that women in the industry have faced much worse things. But his double standards remark does hold when it comes to his stalking incident.

You can watch The White Lotus on HBO Max.
