‘The State failed Daniel’, aunt cries over stab victim nephew’s horror death as she makes fresh full inquest call

THE heartbroken family of stabbing victim Daniel McAnaspie have called for an inquest into his horrific killing.

Although Trevor Noone, 38 and Richard Dekker, 39, were convicted over his killing, there has never been any hearing at the coroner’s court.

Tragic Daniel was in State care at the time he was killed

The pair stabbed Daniel over 20 times in the back, body and throat with garden shears in Blanchardstown in Dublin in February 2010.

Noone was convicted of Daniel’s manslaughter and Dekker was found guilty of the teenager’s murder.

His remains were eventually recovered from a drain in Rathfeigh, Co Meath on May 12, 2010.

Daniel’s aunt Sabrina wants the inquest because the teenager was in the care of the HSE at the time of his killing.

Sabrina said: “It is still very important for our family that a full inquest is called into Daniel’s killing.

“The State failed Daniel and that’s why there should be a hearing to establish the full facts of the care he received before he was taken from us.

“We didn’t have an inquest in the past because of the criminal proceedings but they have all finished now.

“Daniel deserves to have an inquest and we also have the right to the answers we have been searching for a long time for.

“We hope that there will be some movement over the coming months in relation to this inquest taking place.”

At present, Trevor Noone remains a free man after his release from prison in 2023.

He was released after serving just six years for his role in the barbaric killing.

Daniel’s family previously opened up on their horror at his release.

Sabrina said: “They went to prison and got three meals a day.

“Got a PlayStation, got a telly and got fresh air. Daniel got a coffin.

“We got back Daniel in a coffin with his bones.

“Their families are getting them back ready to have their lives, ready to have kids, get married. And we get bones. Where’s the justice in that?”

Daniel’s sister Caitriona added: “He gets to see his family every day, he can have children, something Daniel never got to have.

“He goes on with his day to day while we’re suffering every day. The pain of losing Daniel will never go away.”

In 2022, the family marked Daniel’s 30th birthday in Glasnevin Cemetery.

His sister said: “We celebrated Dano’s 30th at a grave. We had all our kids, some of them wouldn’t have met Dano but they know of him and they celebrated.

“It was horrible to see.”

She told a TG4 documentary: “My ma would have been open arms for him when he got there so that was a bit of a comfort. She would have been waiting for him.”
