The Illuminate Are Planet-Killing Menaces in Helldivers 2 And Somehow, They’re Still the Worst to Fight

In December, an enemy faction from the first Helldivers game, the Illuminate, was added to Helldivers 2. Since the beginning of their invasion, the faction has made a lot of progress, sparking debates among the community as everyone is wondering why most divers are not playing Illuminate missions.

The main reason could be that Illuminate missions are slightly more challenging than Automaton and Terminid missions, so most beginners don’t prefer Illuminate missions. As for experienced players, they are looking for variety, something that the faction currently lacks. This problem is expected to be solved soon, as Arrowhead has confirmed that more Illuminate units are on their way.

Why are Helldivers 2 players not playing Illuminate missions?

A viral post on the r/Helldivers subreddit pointed out that the Illuminate faction has managed to destroy 2 planets in just a few months. The community responded to the meme by highlighting that the Illuminate faction is “boring,” and that’s why most players are not fighting them.

Honorable mention to Terminids for Meridia, I guess.

The bugs and bots are constantly evolving, but Illuminate has been the same since the release of the Omens of Tyranny update. Players are tired of fighting the same enemies again and again, so that explains why Illuminate missions’ popularity has dipped. The missions are indeed challenging and exciting, but the faction lacks variety.

The Illuminate was a part of the first Helldivers game, so the units from the first game will certainly make a comeback soon. The game’s director, Mikael Eriksson, recently revealed that most players love to fight bugs, so the studio’s approach to making the game more exciting is by expanding the existing factions. Jet Brigade and Predator Strain are just the beginning, as the studio plans to create more branches within enemy factions.

More Illuminate units will soon join the game

Shortly after the Omens of Tyranny update was revealed at The Game Awards 2024, Mikael Eriksson confirmed that the initial Illuminate invasion involved the Illuminate Vanguard Fleet, which is just a small section of the entire faction. The studio is working on a lot of new content, so players should expect to see some new, stronger Illuminate units on the battlefield soon.

The first Helldivers game featured some strong Illuminate enemies like Illusionist, Council Member, Obelisk, Apprentice, Strider, and Great Eye, so the community must remain patient. Don’t underestimate this faction because some of its strong units are capable of taking out Helldivers in a single shot. The studio has enough content planned for 2025 that Helldivers 2 might end up winning the Best Multiplayer Award once again.
