THE CHASE viewers have been unable to contain their shock after Shaun Wallace got an easy question wrong and say ‘it has to be on purpose’.
Barrister Shaun, 64, has been a Chaser since the ITV show began in 2009 and is usually a force to be reckoned with.

Yet this time he failed a simple question as he attempted to catch a contestant during their individual chase.
On the show a team of four contestants individually attempt to amass as much money as possible which is later added to a prize fund if the contestant survives their chase.
In a video clip posted on Reddit, Shaun, aka The Dark Destroyer, was attempting to eliminate a contestant from the game and prevent their money from being added to the collective prize fund.
The multiple choice question, asked by host Bradley Walsh, asked: “If a car is travelling at 60 miles per hour, what distance is covered in a minute?”
As the contestant talked about how easy the question was – Bradley laughed and said: “It’s nuts, aint it.”
She replied: “I’m alright at maths but I didn’t think that was too bad.”
Bradley laughed before revealing the correct answer was one mile and that she had got it right.
However, the pair were dumbfounded when Shaun got it wrong and selected two miles – the wrong answer of course.
The contestant asked Shaun: “Are you having a laugh?” as Bradley collapsed in laughter.
Then she asked him: “Are you alright Shaun?”
Shaun replied: “That was shocking!”
Fans were quick to reply to the clip and one said: “Shaun is the only chaser I’ve seen get such simple questions wrong it’s felt deliberate.”
Another stated: “I have a theory that if Shaun likes a contestant he’ll “throw” a question. But only one per contestant.
“I think he’s just playing with them until the Final Chase where he’s seriously trying to win. Do you think so?”
The Chase’s best moments

The Chase has been entertaining ITV viewers for years, here are some of the show’s most memorable moments…
Bradley Walsh can’t stop laughing
- Every time host Bradley Walsh erupts into fits of laughter on The Chase it makes for pretty entertaining TV. One particularly memorable occasion was when he was asking the question ‘The title of which Elvis Presley song was engraved of the inside of Freddie Star’s coffin?” As usual the contestant was given four multiple choices but Bradley could get through reading them out before bursting into hysterics. Seeming the idea of the song being option ‘B: Way Down’ was too much for the presenter to handle.
The Double Trouble special
- To celebrate 15 years of The Chase on screens, ITV launched a special ‘double trouble’ episode where contestants faced off against not one but two of the show’s beloved Chasers. And despite the odds, the contestants managed to go home with some cash!
The contestants with famous names
- Eagle-eyed ITV fans are always quick to spot interesting and sometimes hidden details on the quiz show – but there have been a few times where the names of some contestants have been overtly obvious. For example, one 2017 episode of the quiz show saw Bradley welcome four contestants who were named after Friends characters Ross, Rachel, Phoebe and Joey. Another group of contestants with named from The Simpsons were also grouped together in another episode, much to viewers’ amusement.
The Beast’s anger gets the best of him
- During an episode from the 2024 season, Mark Labbett let out his inner beast as he exploded in a fit of anger. Close to losing the competition in the Final Chase, Mark then made a silly mistake and incorrectly answered the question, “Rabbit was a 1980 hit for which Cockney duo?” “Oh, you idiot!” he yelled at himself while slamming the table in front of him. With seconds left on the clock, the Chaser then admitted defeat, moaning “I don’t deserve to win.”
A third replied: “Based on the fact he would never get this wrong, that seems quite likely.
“If he planned to throw this question before it came up, and then didn’t have enough time to realise that this one was so easy that a) contestant would 95% get it and b) him NOT getting it would look weird, this would be the outcome.”
While another said: “I think he tries to give them a chance; I remember he chose Apollo when the question was about the identity of the Anteros statue at Piccadilly Circus, even Bradley was beyond shocked, as was I.”
“I hope that’s right. I’ve never understood why he gets such easy questions wrong and the difficult questions he can answer in a second.
“He seems worse with multiple choice than the quick fire questions. My theory was always that he talks himself out of the right answer” quipped another viewer.
But, it’s not the first time Shaun has got an easy question wrong.
During a recent final chase, he failed a simple question as he attempted to catch up to the contestants at the end of the show.
The question, asked by Bradley, saw Shaun asked how many centimetres are in a metre with the barrister and quiz expert answering “ten”.
The real answer is a hundred, and many viewers could not get over Shaun’s spectacular fail.
Taking to social media to share their shock, one viewer wrote: “Shaun is thick as mince sometimes for an intelligent man.”
Another posted: “Absolutely no way does Shaun not know how many cms are in a metre! I’m sure he does this deliberately at times!”
“Typical Shaun throwing a question when he has a low target,” said a third.
The Chase airs on ITV1 and is available to stream on ITVX.
