“The bones are getting brittle”: Kiefer Sutherland Has an Upsetting Update on ‘24’ Revival Despite Aiming to Return as Jack Bauer Soon

Kiefer Sutherland has starred in innumerable projects over the course of the past few decades that he has been a part of the entertainment industry, but the 24 franchise still manages to top the list. Among all of his uncountable acting credits over the years, he has pulled off the role of Jack Bauer so exceptionally that there’s no one else fans would want to see in the role.

That said, when it comes to the respective character that he embodied for more than a decade and has even won a Primetime Emmy and a Golden Globe for, Sutherland is more than just open to return to the screens in yet another action-filled masterpiece. But while he aims to come back, the actor also has a rather upsetting update on the franchise’s revival and his return.

It has been more than a decade since Kiefer Sutherland last graced his presence on the screens as Jack through the 2014 limited series 24: Live Another Day from the titular franchise. So it’s only understandable that fans are desperate to have him reprise the role. And the actor, for one, is pretty much down for it—except that there are some strings attached.

During an interview with The Guardian where he had to answer readers’ questions, the Designated Survivor star shed light on his return as Jack, saying,

I’ve learned to say: never say never. But if the writers are going come up with a good idea, they better do it quick, because I’m slowing down. Time is catching up and the bones are getting brittle.

As heartbreaking as it sounds, it’s only true, because, with each passing day, Sutherland isn’t getting any younger—especially for action-packed roles like that of Jack. After emphasizing this, he proceeded to suggest a revival idea, saying, “Maybe they should reboot it with new characters and Jack somehow gets out of China and that storyline’s resolved. I’m open to all of it.” He added,

24 was one of my great experiences in life and if there’s a smart, intelligent way to finish it – or at least finish my involvement – I’m open to that.

With that being put out there, it’s inevitable that if fans truly want to see Sutherland return as their favorite character, they might as well start demanding the studios about it already before time runs out.

Meanwhile, Kiefer Sutherland has learned to respond to the name ‘Jack’

While performing iconically in a role is one thing, the Eye for an Eye star really took it to a whole other level when it came to Jack. This is because his performance as the respective character has been so beyond commendable over the years that fans have started using his name synonymously with him—and Sutherland, for one, is getting used to it. As he continued to share:

I’ve also had to learn how to respond to the name Jack because people just go: Jack! I was just settling in my seat on a plane and this lady leaned over and said: “I feel much safer now that you’re sitting next to me.” I took a beat and said: “I don’t know why. Everyone who sits next to me dies.” I was joking, but I’m not sure she knew how to take it.

Needless to say, all of this is more than enough to emphasize the fact that the role of Jack in the 24 franchise has only won the hearts of so many fans worldwide because of Sutherland’s epic embodiment of him. At the same time, it remains to be seen if he gets to reprise his role anytime soon, unless the studios decide to get to work immediately.

24 can currently be streamed on Prime Video/Hulu.
