Jinshi has a complicated family history, especially when his brother is actually his biological father. The person he’s raised to believe as his father is a disgusting man. He never grew up with the love and care a child deserves. However, it doesn’t mean Jinshi isn’t loved in The Apothecary Diaries.

Being royalty might seem privileged but their upbringing is incredibly controlled. Jinshi is the perfect example of this. They’ve made him pretend to be someone he isn’t and his choices are limited. He didn’t get a chance to grow up with loving parents. Gaoshun, however, took on this role for him.
In the current timeline of The Apothecary Diaries, Jinshi might get on Maomao’s nerves but Gaoshun has to deal with the brunt of it. He often has to deal with how dramatic the boy can get, but it shows how deeply he cares for him. He ended up raising Jinshi the most and made him the person he is today.
Gaoshun is the dad who stepped up and he taught Jinshi well
Jinshi might be quite childish and teases people a lot, particularly Maomao for a good chunk. Beneath that, however, is an intelligent and diligent man. He does his duties well and it’s all thanks to Gaoshun’s teachings.
He also corrects him whenever he doesn’t uphold his duties, something not a lot of people in the Inner Court would do. However, it’s not all about teaching him. Gaoshun also had to soothe Jinshi in his childhood, tolerate his dramatic reactions, and witness his interactions with Maomao.
Their interactions are the closest we will get to seeing Jinshi having a father figure. Gaoshun might be tolerating his antics because he is his superior but it’s also true that he has a soft spot for him. He also takes on the role of elder brother since the current Emperor is certainly not the brotherly type.
Gaoshun is the reason why Jinshi probably is more human than just a political leader. He’s pragmatic and empathetic, traits they both share. Gaoshun already has experience with his own children so he’s naturally a good father to Jinshi as well. Even The Apothecary Diaries fans agree with this.

Unfortunately, a lot of their funnier scenes are in the manga. The anime cuts down on a bunch of these interactions, making us wish we could see more of them.
Gaoshun and all the Jinshi drama😆

Nevertheless, it’s an unspoken thing that Gaoshun has unintentionally adopted Jinshi as his own. He already has a daughter and two sons. We all agree this man also deserves a vacation.
Nobody handles Jinshi better than Gaoshun
While other characters might expect a lot from Jinshi or only see him for his exceptionally good looks, Gaoshun knows he’s just a boy. He protects him and soothes him when he’s down, although it can be quite a lot for even someone as patient as him.

Gaoshun’s character is easily the most likable of the cast. He’s not complicated, he’s patient and does his duties well. He also has a soft side to him. Who doesn’t love it when stoic men are weak for cats? The director of The Apothecary Diaries, Norihiro Naganuma, also names him as his favorite.
So being Jinshi’s surrogate father only adds to his appeal. He took on such a huge burden, raising another child when he already has 3. Gaoshun definitely deserves more credit than he gets in The Apothecary Diaries.
The Apothecary Diaries is available on Crunchyroll.
