Maomao’s nonchalant personality in The Apothecary Diaries is almost shocking when one considers her childhood and past experiences. She doesn’t dwell on her feelings for too long and continues to pursue her passion, helping numerous people in the process. She isn’t interested in the matters of the heart or most human relationships in general, and her avoidance is shaped by her tragic experiences.
Maomao can also go a bit overboard with certain matters, a trait she has inherited from her biological father, Lakan. Her relationship with Lakan has always been rocky, but she shares some of her best and worst qualities with him. Even though Maomao herself would disagree, she’s extremely similar to the man she intenty dislikes.
Maomao’s intense feelings towards Lakan in The Apothecary Diaries
Lakan unintentionally abandoned Maomao during her childhood and never got to play the role of her father. He deeply cares about her and dotes on her; however, that’s not how his feelings come across to Maomao. For her, all the initial interactions she had with her biological father were somewhat creepy. He acts obsessively and wants to be a part of her life, and he can be quite pushy about it.
This is the primary reason why Maomao doesn’t like being around him. But, there’s more to her intense feelings. Ever since she was a child, she looked up to Luomen. Luomen thinks highly of Lakan’s intellect, which makes Maomao envious of Lakan. With that context, it’s quite sad that she would never acknowledge how she’s similar to Lakan in many ways.
Maomao would never accept that she inherited her dark traits from Lakan
Maomao is known for her intellect and adaptability in The Apothecary Diaries. No matter what life throws at her, she finds a way around even the most difficult situations. She is admirable in many ways, but her twisted personality seeps through in some situations. This usually happens when someone mentions her father.
She immediately starts exuding a malicious aura that even caught Jinshi off-guard. As much as she hates her father Lakan, it’s quite evident that her obsessive side and twisted ways of getting things done are qualities she has inherited from him. She tends to get obsessive about poisons and even puts her life at risk to taste new ones.
Similarly, when people don’t agree with her, she strategically manipulates them to get her way. Whenever she deploys such tactics, she seems downright evil. Lakan has a similar way of getting things done. He doesn’t see many people as more than just mere pawns. He’s extremely cunning and intellectual, so much so that people tend to keep a safe distance from him.
Despite their rocky relationship, Maomao and Lakan are similar. However, this is something Maomao might never acknowledge due to her complex feelings towards him.
