‘The Apothecary Diaries’ Is the Perfect Example of Why You Shouldn’t Skip Filler Episodes

The Apothecary Diaries is taking over the anime world and rightfully so. The mesmerizing art style, whimsical storytelling, and clever plot weaving elevate the show into one of the best anime in recent years.

While the main character Maomao and her intriguing narration are a key reason behind the show’s success, special mention needs to be given to the show’s pacing. Especially since even what seems to be the filler episodes play a huge part in the overall storyline.

If anything, the series cements the fact that you should never skip the filler episodes if you truly want to stay up to date on every intricate detail in The Apothecary Diaries.

As stated above, one of the main draws for The Apothecary Diaries is the clever way it weaves the intricacies of the plot in many ways. Maomao’s thought process, even if confusing at times, obviously is a huge clue into something fishy going on in the rear palace.

However, the show also uses its pacing to spread the intricacies out further that only becomes apparent once the full picture materializes in front of the fans. What is even more fascinating is that one of the key instruments they utilize to maintain this tactic is what could otherwise be termed as the filler episodes.

For example, fans would remember the episode in the second cour of The Apothecary Diaries Season 1, when Maomao went with Basen to solve the mystery of the three brothers’ inheritance. Or, the episode when she went to investigate the cause of a palace official slipping into a coma suddenly.

Although both episodes seemingly came off as fillers, when the entire assassination plot was revealed, fans could piece together how important a part those filler episodes played into etching out the plot.

Incidentally, the ongoing second season has been rife with what seem to be filler episodes from the start, much to many fans’ dismay.

The recently aired Episode 10 also gave off the exact same vibe. If anything, though, the latest episode only cemented that filler episodes hold some real values in The Apothecary Diaries. Even if the value comes in the shape of Maomao detailing a horrifying grave robbing story in a gathering.

Fans commend The Apothecary Diaries for its unique use of filler episodes

The recent episode of The Apothecary Diaries introduced three new characters at the Jade Pavillion. Namely, Haku-u, Koku-u, and Seki-u, three sisters who came from the Western province to aid Gyokuyo and the maids as the consort’s pregnancy is advancing with each day.

Although the maids were well acquainted with each other thanks to being from the same area, Maomao had a little trouble remembering their names. Regardless, the real fun started when Yinghua cleverly dragged Maomao into accompanying her to a mysterious gathering where the palace maids sat in a circle by candlelight and shared spooky stories.

Among all the other maids, the enigmatic Shisui was also present and possibly narrated one of the wildest stories of the night. Maomao, too, tried to narrate a story regarding grave robbing until Yinghua shut her down quickly to save everyone from the gory details.

Things took a drastic turn when the host was revealed to be planning a mass murder involving all the attendees, which would turn them into “The 13th story”.

By the time Maomao realized something was wrong, the host somehow vanished into the night with a chilling warning that sent shivers down even the protagonist’s spine. At any rate, fans seem to be loving every minute of it.

As stated above, at first glance, this all seems to be designed to lighten the mood before the show delves into a bigger plot. However, with The Apothecary Diaries’ track record, this might play a key part in the mysteries being constructed in the rear palace.

Unfortunately, fans will only realize the truth of the matter when the curtain rises at last. As it stands, fans seem to be waiting with bated breath for that to happen as soon as possible.

The Apothecary Diaries is streaming on Crunchyroll.
