SuperSport United’s supporters have dreaded this moment since the rumours broke in late 2024. The club known as Matsatsantsa a Pitori is ceasing to exist.
Following years of reported financial struggles, the Multichoice-owned football club has been sold to new owners.
According to the leading South African sports journalist Robert Marawa, SuperSport United has been sold for R50 million to an unnamed young businessman from Bloemfontein.

With the Bloemfontein Celtic name yet to be made available, the club will be known as Celtic United.
Robert Marawa announced the news on social media: “Bloemfontein Celtic” is back in the Premiership for next season, with the Marawa Scorpions unravelling that the status of Supersport United has been bought by a young Bloemfontein businessman for an amount of R50 Million Rand!! The Club will operate as Celtic United,” the report concluded.

United’s roots stem from the club that was known as Pretoria City before the sports broadcasting giants, Multichoice, bought the club in 1994 and named it SuperSport United.
The new owners created stability, professionalism and youth development. The club became South African champions three times under the legendary coach Gavin Hunt.
SuperSport United also won domestic cups such as the MTN8 in 2017 and 2019 and three Nedbank Cups in 2012, 2016, and 2017 under former coach Stuart Baxter.
The club, led by coach Eric Tinkler, made its name on the continent after losing the CAF Confederation Cup final in 2017.
