TAKE a look at this little-known Irish beach that boasts extensive white sand, pristine waters, fun activities – and has its very own island.
Derrynane Beach, located in Caherdanie, Kerry, is a must-see blue flag beach.

Situated on the tip of the Iveragh Peninsula, this breathtaking beach is found along the Ring of Kerry.
Take a stroll across the 1.5 km long beach to discover the beauty and history of Abbey Island.
Explore the ruins of the former monastery with a cemetery or pay a visit to former mansion Derrynane House.
The beach has dedicated swimming areas but beware of the section with strong currents known locally as ‘Danger Beach’.
As the beach is sheltered by the nearby headland, it makes the perfect spot to catch some rays.
It’s a popular spot for all the family with fishing, surfing, sailing, and kayaking.
Derrynane Beach is also a great spot for stargazing with no surrounding artificial light sources.
On a clear night, you can be lucky enough to spot the Milky Way and numerous stars.
Rated five stars, beachgoers took to TripAdvisor to share their thoughts.
One person said: “I’ve been coming here for over fifty years. I never tire of it. It is in my opinion one of the most stunning places in Ireland.
“I have stayed here for weeks at a time and surfed, fished, and visited the islands of Scarriff and Deenish and, of course, the Skelligs.
“Both the Derrynane and Lambs Head side of the bay are amazing.”
Another said: “Fantastic beach split in two by rocks just beside Derrynane House, long walk possible and plenty of opportunity for photos.
“Visit to Derrynane House and tearooms an option also.
“Badly in need of a signpost after turning off the main road, as doubts will set in that you are on the correct road, but persevere…it’s worth it.”
While another added: “Stunning gem of a blue flag beach even on a grey cool ‘Irish summer’ day that will take your breath away.
“Staffed by lifeguards during the summer months.
“Go slow on the twisty ferny narrow road down to the beach as it is one car width mostly with few pull in spaces to deal with oncoming cars.”
