THE Still Game cafe owners have revealed the devastating reason for its shock closure
Robyn’s Nest in Maryhill was the setting for Craiglang’s Rendezvous Cafe.
The business has been home to some of the show’s most hilarious moments.
This includes Jane McCarry’s notorious gossip Isa stopping by for a chat and ordering everything on a breakfast roll.
But away from the TV screens and Still Game fame, Robyn’s Nest has been a staple in Glasgow for decades.
Despite years of serving punters, the owners announced the sad news earlier this month that they will be closing down for good.
And Robert Somerville, who opened the cafe with wife Anne in 2002, revealed some of the rising costs he has endured.
He told the Glasgow Times: “We’re losing between about £1,500 and £2,000 a month.
“Before the Ukraine war and the energy crisis, our average bill for electricity was about £425 a month; it shot up to nearly £1,100.
“The oil went from £18 a drum to £40 a drum, eggs went from £10 a tray to £30 a tray.
“The running operation of the café was probably £22,000 a year for rent, rates, gas and electricity, it’s now working out at £41,000 a year.”
Mr Somerville also blamed a decrease in passing trade, the pandemic, working from home,
Ford Kiernan, who plays Jack Jarvis in the sitcom, also spoke about his happy memories of Robyn’s Nest.
He said: “It’s really sad to hear of the demise of the café.”
“We had great times filming in there, particularly the Kill Wullie episode.
“And it was especially terrific because we were working and filming in a real-life café that served up lovely grub.”
