Solo Leveling: Is Sung Jinwoo the Goku of Modern Anime?

Solo Leveling is reaching new heights every day with Season 2 in full swing. Although fans have been loving every second of the show since its start, there is another reason for their appreciation increasing recently.

That is, after years of relentless fighting, Sung Jinwoo finally got to see his family reunite. This not only gives him time to evaluate himself and his actions but also frees him from his burdens a lot. This lets him focus on his future since he first became a Hunter in Solo Leveling.

Interestingly, though, there seems to be another aspect of the show that has recently caught fans’ attention. If their reactions are anything to go by, Jinwoo might have established himself as the Goku of modern anime.

Sung Jinwoo might just be the new Goku of anime

Solo Leveling is one of the most popular anime series of recent times. As such, people comparing it to older classics isn’t actually rare. However, it seems like fans might be onto something with their comparisons.

The reason is that the protagonist Sung Jinwoo seems to be portraying some behavior akin to another legendary anime protagonist of all time. That is, Son Goku from Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball series.

While people might not need any introduction on either of these characters, they might need to take a look at a few behaviors both of them seem to share. For example, Goku seems to love stretching at all times, no matter where he is. Jinwoo, too, has shown his affinity for the same throughout the show.

The recent episode seemingly leaned on that aspect more by showing the protagonist the Goku leg stretches in the background while Chae-In and Baek Yoonho were engaged in a conversation. Moreover, the cutoff timing, too, had a hilarious connotation with the stretching seemingly transitioning into a Super Saiyan-like blast from Jinwoo.

What makes this situation even more fascinating is that this is not even the first time Solo Leveling has referenced Dragon Ball in the show. Fans would remember that after Toriyama passed away in March 2024, Solo Levelling paid homage to the late mangaka in Episode 9 of Season 1 by making Jinwoo do the Goku bounce before a fight.

Ever since, fans have made it a ridiculous mission to compare the two protagonists. As such, most fans seem to find the obvious similarities between Sung Jinwoo and Goku in the recent episode, the creator’s way of leaning into the hilarious comparisons.

As stated above, the Solo Leveling fandom has been having quite the time with the show picking up speed for the upcoming arcs. In light of that, the recent episode’s blatant references to Goku have lightened the fans’ moods.

Especially since they seem to believe that it is the creators’ way of stating, ‘If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em’ in the most hilarious way possible. A recent post on the r/sololeveling subreddit also gained traction for the same reason, and it would be safe to say that fans are loving this crossover to a great degree.

Do you think an S ranker with God-like physicality would need to warm up their muscles lol?

Interestingly, it turns out that Solo Leveling and Dragon Ball actually share a connection that goes back years before the former ever made it to the anime world. For context, on March 4th, 2018, Goku debuted his perfected Ultra Instinct onscreen for the first time.

Coincidentally, Solo Leveling’s webtoon also debuted on the very same day. At any rate, Solo Leveling’s soaring success will only gain new heights after this as the Jeju Island Arc finally starts its run. It’ll be interesting to see if Sung Jinwoo pulls out more Goku moves from the vault during that as well.

Solo Leveling and Dragon Ball are both streaming on Crunchyroll.
