“Show up for the entertainment industry”: While Rockstar Has Said No to the GTA Movie, Blizzard Still Embraces the Idea With Open Arms

Movies like Uncharted, Five Nights at Freddy’s, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 have proven that video game adaptations are quite popular nowadays. Naturally, many video game developers are using this opportunity to generate more revenue out of their valuable IPs. One such developer is Blizzard Entertainment, as the studio is interested in venturing into filmmaking once again.

Almost every developer has acknowledged the idea of making a film based on their beloved IP, except one: Rockstar Games. The Grand Theft Auto franchise has so much potential, but it seems like Take-Two Interactive will never create a movie based on the franchise. However, in the past, the CEO of Take-Two Interactive created some hype by revealing the only demand that must be fulfilled if players want to see a Grand Theft Auto movie.

Blizzard Entertainment is interested in making more movies based on its IPs

Blizzard Entertainment, which is a subsidiary of Activision Blizzard, has some precious IPs under its belt and it seems like it is interested in expanding the franchise in a different medium. Blizzard President Johanna Faries recently appeared for an interview with WindowsCentral to talk about her experience of working with Blizzard.

During the conversation, Faries hinted that Blizzard is interested in vectoring its IPs in different directions, however, the studio wishes to make sure that the adaptations don’t get butchered,

Our universes, our iconic IP can vector off into many interesting dynamic directions. We have to be thoughtful, responsible stewards of those franchises, right? Not everything will fit, and execution absolutely matters. We do think about what we can do to show up for the entertainment industry, as broadly as we can describe, so Blizzard can continue to be a beacon of that sort of… magic making, fostering joy.

There are many examples of horrible video game adaptations: 2024’s Borderlands and 2016’s Assassin’s Creed. In fact, A Minecraft Movie flopped even before it got released, so it is very important that developers work with the right filmmakers to make sure that their IPs don’t get ruined.

Blizzard Entertainment isn’t new to video game adaptations

In May 2006, Blizzard announced that it partnered up with Legendary Pictures to create its first ever video game adaptation: 2016’s Warcraft. The film received mixed reviews from critics and fans, however, it became the highest-grossing film based on a video game at the time. Now, it seems like Blizzard is ready for another shot.

While it’s great to see Blizzard interested in making movies out of their IPs, there is one adaptation that everyone has been desperately waiting for: Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto franchise. Over the years, the studio has never provided solid information about an adaptation; however, in 2019, Strauss Zelnick, the CEO of Take-Two Interactive, explained that a movie is only possible if they have complete creative control.
