The prestigious award recognises airport excellence in customer experience worldwide.

Experts gathered information about passenger satisfaction from over 400 terminals across the globe.

It then uses this information to crown the winners.

And Inverness Airport was named the best one in Europe that serves under two million passengers.

The tiny building fought off stiff competition from dozens of other airports to win the award.

The other winners in the category were all airports that are based in Spain.

This includes: El Hierro Airport, Girona-Costa Brava Airport, Pamplona Airport, Reus Airport and Zaragoza Airport

Not only that, but it is also the third year in a row that Inverness Airport won the award for having the Most Dedicated Staff in Europe.

General Manager of Inverness Airport, Graeme Bell, said: “To win these awards for the fifth consecutive year is an incredible achievement and a proud moment for everyone involved with Inverness Airport.

“Being recognised for the third year running as the Airport with the Most Dedicated Staff in Europe as well is a testament to the hard work, passion, and commitment of our entire team.”

The airport was first used as an RAF base in 1940 but later opened for civilian use seven years later.

Airlines including British Airways, easyJet, KLM, Loganair and TUI all operate flights from it.

Loganair, which is the largest regional airline in the UK, operates numerous flights a day from the airport.

It flies to destinations like Belfast, Benbecula in the Outer Hebrides, Kirkwall and Stornoway.

While British Airways and easyJet fly to and from London Heathrow, London Luton and London Gatwick.

Locals can also get a TUI flight from Inverness to Majorca.

Other UK winners at the Airport Service Quality Awards include Newcastle Airport.

This was named among the best for between two to five million passengers.

Last year, Newcastle International Airport was crowned the ‘Overall Winner’ at the Routes World Awards.

The northeastern English airport also retained its title of ‘Airport of the Year‘ in the under five million passengers category for the second year running.
