Sakamoto Days: Shin’s Clinginess to Sakamoto Is a Direct Result of His Traumatic Past in the Lab

Sakamoto Days has a lot of interesting characters. From a retired hitman who always thinks of food to a drunkard martial artist and even a guy who calls worthy opponents ‘hard-boiled’ Sakamoto Days is not running out of weird people anytime soon.

But one character in particular is pretty intriguing, and it is Shin Asakura, one of the first characters to have debuted in the series. He is supposed to be a stone-cold killer and mind-reader, having seen the worst of the assassin world. But how did he suddenly become so attached to Sakamoto?

Ever since the beginning of Sakamoto Days, Shin swore his loyalty to Taro Sakamoto. Even though he was assigned to kill Sakamoto, he remembered the time he worked under the latter and did not want to harm him. Before he had abandoned his hitman life, Sakamoto had taken Shin underneath his wing, to train him as a partner, and the two formed a close bond.

However, all of that is in the past, and for an assassin, it is extremely important to be merciless to their targets, no matter their personal ties. So why did Shin choose to stick to Sakamoto despite knowing that he, too would become a potential target in the near future?

In fact, he even went to the lengths of rebelling against his organization just to accompany Sakamoto. He did not get any fat bribe in return, yet he readily left his high-paying job to work at a mere convenience store, all the while dealing with Sakamoto’s violent fantasies of killing him.

Shin’s past shaped his decisions in Sakamoto Days

Shin’s father left him at the tender age of six. He was only taken care of by Asakura, a researcher and scientist friend of his father’s. But even then, Asakura had his own job and could not dedicate himself to raising a kid. It was due to his negligence that Shin drank the serum, which made him a psychic.

Bonding with Sakamoto as a trainee made him feel close to someone for a long time. Thus, he could not bring himself to kill Sakamoto no matter what; after all, he considered the guy family. So when he saw that Sakamoto had found himself the perfect family, something he himself craved for, he couldn’t get himself to kill his target.

When Sakamoto added Shin to his small family, Shin felt the warmth that he had always missed. He had found a big brother who would always care for him and look after him. There was no way that he could turn down the coziness of a family, even if someone had offered him untold treasures.

Sakamoto Days manga is available to read on Viz Medi,a and the anime is currently streaming on Crunchyroll.
