Actress Sadie Sink rose to prominence with her character portrayal of Max Mayfield in Netflix’s very popular and successful series Stranger Things. Sink has been highly appreciated for her work on the show, after which she appeared as the lead in Taylor Swift’s short film All Too Well opposite Dylan O’Brien. The actress later went on to appear in the critically acclaimed movie The Whale in 2022.

The actress plays the titular role in the upcoming post-apocalyptic musical drama O’Dessa. She stars alongside Kelvin Harrison Jr., Murray Bartlett, and Regina Hall. She will also be seen in the fifth and final season of Stranger Things, which is expected to release soon. Sadie Sink recently shared how she feels about the show coming to its conclusion and her role.
Sadie Sink recalls the moment she got Max Mayfield in Stranger Things
In a recent interview with Josh Horowitz for his Happy Sad Confused podcast, Sadie Sink appeared to promote her upcoming movie O’Dessa. She was asked about her joining Stranger Things, to which she said that she remembers auditioning here and there after she finished her second Broadway show. She also added that she went back to 8th grade and enjoyed her school.

Sadie Sink shared with Horowitz that while attending school full-time, she would audition for things like commercials and movies. That’s when Stranger Things came along. Sink mentioned that it felt right to her, and upon asking how she reacted to getting the role, she said,
It was a huge moment; it was just a complete shock phone call from Matt and Ross. No, crying for me, just a big smile, but my brother did cry. I knew it was a big deal, but I was mostly just kind of excited to, like, be able to work on something for that long and, like, know that, like, ‘Oh, I get to act with these people, this cast, who seem so amazing.’
It was surprising to know that Sadie Sink just had a smile on her face when she was told she had been finalized to play a significant part in Stranger Things after it was known that she basically begged for the part. During an interview with Fashion, Sink shared that casting directors had initially expressed their hesitancy to cast an adult Sadie Sink for a 14-year-old character.
However, the actress shared that she had already made a connection with the character and was not going to let it go without a fight. She said,
I just begged and pleaded with them to give me more material so I could show them something fresh.
Her begging and pleading eventually worked, and she was given the part. Sink became the group’s new member in Season 2 and played a significant role in Season 4 after she became a target of Vecna.
People would have expected the actress to react a little emotionally after hearing that she’s got a part she desired, but guess everyone processes their happiness differently.
Sadie Sink talks about filming on the last day of Stranger Things
Stranger Things is one of the most popular and successful shows on Netflix, and its fifth and final season is highly anticipated. At her recent appearance at SXSW for her upcoming film O’Dessa, Sadie Sink was asked about the final season, and she said to THR,
I haven’t seen anything from it yet; I’m very curious, though. It’s going to be super emotional, so I’m ready to cry with everyone.
The actress added that the cast and crew had already cried on the final day of the filming, which was concluded in December. Sink noted that she had cried so much that her eyes were so puffy, sharing that they had never been like that before, and there are some pretty embarrassing pictures of her just with the giant puffy eyes.

Sink was also asked about her experience of working on O’Dessa, to which she said that she was instantly intrigued by the character but had to listen to the music. The actress recalled that she really fell in love with her character and just the musical world of her.
All songs in O’Dessa are original and written by the film’s writer/director Geremy Jasper, who also has 2017’s Patti Cake$ under his credits. In talking to ScreenRant, the actress shared that for her, saying yes to the character was like a gut instinct.
O’Dessa is set to premiere on March 20, 2025 on Hulu.
