Toulouse is having a moment – it was named named the top city in the world to visit in 2025 by Lonely Planet.
The Roman-founded city in southern France blends Roman history and French culture with an influence from Spain’s neighbouring Catalonia.
With ancient Roman ruins, a bustling nightlife, and great food, it is the ideal city to explore on foot.
Visitors can stroll for miles by the riverfront and visit the public Jardin des Plantes and Jardin Japonais, or grab a bite to eat in one of the winding streets off the bustling Place du Capitole in the city centre.
Holidaymakers can buy a three-day tourist pass for local transport and museum entry, plus a guided tour and boat trip along the Garonne or Canal du Midi.
Foodies will love the 100- plus year-old Victor Hugo market, with more than 90 stalls selling the best local cheeses, meats, seafood and cakes.
If you don’t fancy cooking yourself, there are five small restaurants upstairs in the market serving dishes featuring produce from the stalls below.
If you’re visiting with kids, it is also the best city in Europe for the aviation and space industries.
At AviaSim, you can pilot an Airbus A320 on a realistic flight simulator and at Aeroscopia – the museum of the air – you can marvel at their huge collection of planes and even hop on board an old Concorde.
The Airbus factory next door offers assembly line tours where you can see planes being built and there’s also the Cite de l’Espace, which one of our writers described as, “a cross between a theme park and a science museum” when they visited.
Visitors can take a moonwalk wearing special backpacks to simulate the lack of gravity, and see 3.3billion-year-old moon rock.
Lonely Planet said of the city: “Toulouse’s top ranking is a testament to its dynamic cultural scene, innovative spirit, and welcoming atmosphere.
“The city’s art galleries, repurposed industrial sites, lively cafes, and high-level cuisine, combined with the leisurely ambiance along the sun-drenched banks of the Garonne and the Canal du Midi, make this “Paris in miniature” an irresistible destination.

“Food lovers will be delighted by local specialties: duck breast and confit, Toulouse sausage, cassoulet, cheeses, and the famous Toulouse violet.
“These delights can be enjoyed while strolling through the city’s markets, on a food tour, or in the many restaurants, guinguettes, on lively terraces, or at the heart of the brand-new Halles de La Cartoucherie.”
