She could make her debut in this weekend’s Women’s Premier Division opener against Athlone Town after getting international clearance.

The move sees the 34-year-old reunite with former international teammate Aine O’Gara.

And head coach O’Neill said: “We’re absolutely delighted to have Ruesha join our team.

“Having a player with her level of experience is not just beneficial for us, but it’s also massive for the entire league.”

Regular football for the Hoops would be a big boost for Littlejohn, who has 87 caps for the Girls in Green and is targeting 100.

She said: ”It will be good to get back in a routine of playing football, working with the likes of Collie.

“He’s obviously a very good coach, he’s been in the game a long time.

“I’m looking forward to keep learning.

“It will be nice to have a manager that’s going to help progress me and I’m looking forward to hopefully being here for the team and hopefully we can win as many games as possible.”

Recent days had seen Littlejohn linked with a move to Rovers, but it made for a surprise when it was formally announced.

And fans welcomed it as a major boost both for the Dublin club and the league and women’s game in Ireland as a whole.

Declan said: “Big news for the women’s domestic game..

“Can she be the catalyst to propel the Hoops past @shelsfc and @AthloneTownAFC this season?”

Emer posted: “Huge signing for the league 👏🏻 Looking forward to seeing how Rue gets on”

Gina said: “The transfer of a century 🇮🇪⚽

Alan commented: “Brilliant signing, can’t wait to see Ruesha playing in the Hoops”

And Bobby said: “Brillant business from Rovers and hopefully incresses the profile”

Shamrock Rovers finished a disappointing fifth in the Women’s Premier Division last time out, 20 points shy of champions Athlone Town.

They beat Shelbourne in the President’s Cup, and will face Town in their opening fixture on March 15.
