IRISH eyes were smiling on St Patrick’s Day in Florida as Rory McIlroy claimed his second Players Championship title at TPC Sawgrass.
The Holywood native overcame J.J Spaun in a tense Monday playoff as he became the first European to win the ‘fifth major’ on two occasions.
Both players finished 72 holes tied at 12-under par, forcing a playoff after the event couldn’t be finished on Sunday night due to poor light.
The Down ace scooped a massive $4.5 million payday for the win from the $20m purse on offer at PGA Tour HQ.
The win was the Northern Irishman’s second of the season after claiming the AT&T Pebble Beach Signature event.
McIlroy’s Ryder Cup pal Shane Lowry also scooped a pretty payday after finishing T20 at Ponte Vedra Beach.
The Offaly ace carded a tournament total of -5 to finish seven back from McIlroy and Spaun on Sunday, prior to Monday’s playoff.
Clara’s Lowry earned a $240,250 for his finish, but he drops one place in the OWGR to 15 after the weekend’s PGA Tour flagship event.
