Robert Wagner is still fit and active at 95 after getting a personal trainer and working out in the comfort of his abode, sources close to the Hart to Hart icon exclusively tell Closer.
“He has a home gym and a trainer that puts him through his paces a few times a week,” an insider spills, noting that Robert has wife Jill St. John to thank for helping him stay in fighting form as they enjoy their low-key life together on a lavish Colorado ranch.
“Robert is so much younger than his years, he is full of energy and has a real spark in his eye. He’s extremely close to his daughters and all his grandkids, they bring him so much joy. And he’s still as crazy about Jill as ever. He loves his life, so he’s all about taking good care of himself because he wants to stick around as long as he can,” the source adds.
Robert, who friends call RJ, and Jill have been married since May 26, 1990. The tipster says Robert and his longtime love, widely known for playing Tiffany Case alongside Sean Connery in Diamonds Are Forever, find joy in staying active and like to soak up the scenery.
“He and Jill are also big on going on walks together around their property when the weather is good enough to get outside. They have more than five acres so there’s lots of room to roam,” the insider added.
“He’s sensible about it and knows not to overdo it at his age, but fitness has been a lifelong habit so it’s very much a part of his routine. And the days he doesn’t want to work out Jill pushes him, she’s a great accountability partner because she’s super healthy.”
The couple’s friendship dates back to the 1960s when they met as young actors at Fox Studios.
During those younger years, she took dance classes at the Panaieff Ballet Center, where RJ’s future wife Natalie Wood and his Hart to Hart costar Stephanie Powers also took classes. “The three of us were very friendly,” Jill, now 84, shared, as Closer previously reported.
RJ and Jill got together after growing closer through their shared grief. Jill heard about his late wife Natalie’s accidental drowning off the coast of Catalina Island in November 1981. “Along with the rest of the world, she was saddened by the tragic news,” a friend said. “She reached out and sent Robert a nice note and flowers.”
The now-couple later reunited at a dinner party hosted by a mutual friend and she empathized with his heartbreak because she had lost her second ex-husband, race car driver and Woolworth heir Lance Reventlow, in a devastating 1972 plane crash.
“Much of Lance stayed with me,” Jill said. “We remained friends as long as he lived.”
It was the fourth time down the aisle for both RJ and Jill when they made it official, and a friend said that Robert and Jill have an incredible bond.
“They have that thing couples who enjoy each other have. They banter and finish each other’s sentences. Jill is just good for Robert,” said the friend, who calls them soulmates. “They’re very much alike, they respect each other, and that’s key to their lasting relationship.”
