The world is excited for Avengers: Doomsday to hit the theatres. That has a lot to do with the fact that Robert Downey Jr. will officially return to the MCU years after he left the universe back in 2019 in Avengers: Endgame.
The Dolittle star isn’t the only big name returning though. He will be joined by two people who had been at his side when the MCU was at its peak – the Russo Brothers. The directors are all set to helm Avengers: Doomsday. But in a recent interview, they revealed that they could have joined the ship way earlier.
Fans have a lot of expectations from the Russo brothers

The Russo brothers have made the most of their time after the MCU. In a span of 5 years, they have been a part of 12 movies (the duo has produced most of them). And their latest, The Electric State has generated a lot of hype from fans.
In a conversation on Jake’s Takes, the duo shared how they were absolutely thrilled for the release of the Chris Pratt-starrer. The movie, based on the novel of the same name by Simon Stålenhag, has many elements worth experimenting with. And the Russo brothers have done just that.
While the Millie Bobby Brown starrer might be at the top of their priority this year, they have their eyes set on the prize – the return of Robert Downey Jr. to the MCU. It is a move that might prove to be the game-changer for the universe, which had been going through a lean run for the past few years.

Central to RDJ’s return was the Russo brothers’ decision to jump on board. They have been at the helm of some of the best Marvel projects. What will come as a shock to many is that they had been approached to direct the two Avengers flicks a year before they actually joined.
Robert Downey Jr. wanted the Russo brothers back for a long time

The Russo brothers are Marvel royalty. It doesn’t come as a shock that the decision to bring them back would have sent shockwaves amongst the fans. And the move proved equally difficult for RDJ.
In an episode of Jake’s Takes, Joe Russo revealed that the Oppenheimer star did everything in his power to convince the brothers to jump on board and direct Avengers: Doomsday.
He said,
Interestingly enough Downey decided to go back before we decided to go back. I had a dinner with Downey about a year before we agreed to do the movie where he was trying to convince us why we should do the movie.
That was the time MCU had not moved on from the Kang storyline. While it is all probable that Kevin Feige & Co. would have decided to call it quits with Jonathan Majors, things could have gone in an entirely different direction. But they didn’t. Russo continued,
We just didn’t have a story to tell we didn’t have a way in yet. And then it hit us. Stephen McFeely came up with a really incredible idea.
While a lot remains to be seen about how Doctor Doom will be integrated into the plot. But the Russo Brothers’ return has given fans a lot of reasons to be hopeful for.
