“Robbery”: Shoppers Slam Bath & Body Works’ New “Luxury” Prices

For years, we’ve followed shoppers’ claims that Bath & Body Works is duping popular high-end fragrances and body-care products. Of course, the appeal is that these knockoffs come with the retailer’s famous affordable prices. So, shoppers were quite shocked to find that Bath & Body Works is now selling perfume for the “luxury” price of $75, going so far as to say the store has “lost their minds.”

In a new Reddit thread, one Bath & Body Works fan is calling out the brand for the $75 price tag on its new Sweetest Song perfume.

“I have no problem spending 75 plus dollars on a perfume but not a bath and body works one. And I don’t care how good it may be. Beth and body works is not a luxury brand. They should not be charging luxury prices,” agreed one shopper.

Another said, “$75 for a BBW perfume is just robbery.”

The original poster said this particular scent is a “good-spot on Coach Sunset dupe.” But others pointed out that the name-brand fragrance is $74 (granted, it’s just 1.35 oz compared to Bath & Body Works’ 3.4 oz).

Others said the $75 price tag is due to the perfume’s packaging.

“It’s still expensive, but I feel like the online listing should show the fact that it comes in a music box. Which explains the jump in price,” someone explained, to which someone else responded, “You can’t even remove the insides of the box. So it’s pretty much useless lol. Just a storage box for the perfume.”

Though Sweetest Song is the only perfume priced this high, most others range from $55 to $70.

Some say you’re better off buying the body mist.

As Glossy recently reported, Sweetest Song is a new scent marketed for Mother’s Day. According to the product description, it has notes of “blush raspberries, sugar crystals and whipped musk.” It’s available in 19 different products, from a three-wick candle ($27) to a body butter ($21). But if you’re looking for a fragrance, it might be most economical to skip the perfume and go straight for the body mist ($19).

Glossy notes that Bath & Body Works’ fine fragrance mists (what it calls its body mists) have been the company’s top-selling product for the past six years. In 2024, this product category drove in 19 percent of new customers.

“Body mists have taken off in large part because of their affordability, giving consumers an accessible way to tap into trends like fragrance layering and building a ‘fragrance wardrobe,'” explains Glossy.

And shoppers seem to agree that you might as well buy a body mist, rather than a perfume, at Bath & Body Works.

“For me, their ‘perfume’ isn’t even perfume. It’s a glorified [fine fragrance mist] with only slightly more staying power,” said one Redditor.

“Oooff…I tried the perfume and not even an hour later it was gonzo from my skin. That’s a lot for something that doesn’t last,” another shopper shared.

“I’m gonna wait to buy sweetest song when they have a mini sale or when they have a 5.95 sale on mist and other forms,” agreed someone else.
