Riot Gets Dragged Into Controversy as League of Legends Is Accused of Cloning Balatro

The recently released mini-game in League of Legends is criticized for copying Balatro and Inscryption due to its striking resemblance to the two games. Due to this, Riot has been facing backlash from the game’s community, who feel Riot seems to have lost its edge.

This mini-game is a Noxus-themed roguelike card game called The Demon’s Hand. The game, like the other mini-games, will be playable right out of the League client.

The recent mini-game in League of Legends is quite similar to Balatro

Balatro was released last year in 2024, and it got a largely positive response from the gaming community. It did quite well in the market and still seems to be having a great run.

The Demon’s Hand is a strategic turn-based card game where players will be equipped with 8 cards from the deck, each with its unique abilities. These abilities will need to be strategically used against the enemy in order to win the game.

Players will also be allowed to switch these cards 3 times during the match, and they will be able to switch 5 cards at a time. It is solely a strategy game in which people will be able to unlock powerful Sigils to strengthen their attacks and win the game.

Riot has been known for taking inspiration from other things and then turning them into a better version of themselves. Even League of Legends was considered a Dota clone back when it was released, but it managed to create a separate identity free from the shackles of its inspiration.

Balatro’s inspiration is quite apparent in the recent mini-game

League of Legends in-game

The recently released mini-game does have some similarities with games like Balatro, but that should not take away from the fact that it still plays differently from the likes and belongs to the League’s universe.

The inspiration between the two games is quite apparent, but there is a fine line between inspiration and plagiarism, and though Riot might be on the brink, it has still not fallen over that line, and there is still some originality left. The developer has also been criticized for removing a lot of free items from the game as well

League of Legends is Riot’s biggest success story, and it will do anything to keep it away from controversies surrounding plagiarism. Riot has managed to create a vast universe with a huge fan following, and if it wants things to stay the way they are, it will need to work harder than it currently is.
