Rawlings didn’t want to hand over power – KSM

Veteran media personality Kwaku Sintim-Misa (KSM) has recounted how former President Jerry John Rawlings was reluctant to relinquish power after years of military rule.

Speaking on his political show on YouTube monitored by MyNewsGH, KSM stated, “I remember one time they asked Rawlings if he was going to hand over power, and he replied, ‘Hand over power to who?’”

According to him, Rawlings, who initially ruled as a military leader under the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC), wanted to stay in power because he believed he was the only one capable of leading Ghana.

He explained that to transition into civilian rule, Rawlings and his allies formed the National Democratic Congress (NDC), allowing him to contest as a civilian in the 1992 elections.

KSM noted that the NDC, at its inception, was seen as an extension of the PNDC, leading to scepticism from many Ghanaians. “People said he had just removed the ‘P’ so he could run as a civilian,” he said.

Despite these concerns, Rawlings won the 1992 elections and governed as Ghana’s first president under the Fourth Republic.
