Ladies and gentlemen of the ton, gather ’round! Another high society baby is on the way, and it has the potential to drive a further wedge between Prince William and Prince Harry.
Recently, their mutual friends Hugh Grosvenor and Olivia Grosvenor announced they are expecting their first baby. “The Duke and Duchess of Westminster are very pleased to share that the Duchess is expecting a baby in the summer,” a spokesperson for the couple said in a statement. “The couple are delighted with the news and are very much looking forward to starting a family together.”
Now there is already chatter about whether one of the estranged brothers will be this child’s godfather. After all, Hugh is godfather to Prince William’s 11-year-old son Prince George and to Prince Harry’s 5-year-old son Prince Archie.
People‘s report gives the impression that only Prince William is in the running. The news outlet pointed out that only Prince William was present at the Grosvenor’s nuptials last June. Perhaps serving as an usher at the high society wedding proves he would be a good godfather.
At the time, a source told the outlet that Prince Harry’s absence from the celebration was an “understanding between the two friends.”
Perhaps the Grosvenors will look to the future King of England to be the godfather because he is also the future head of the Church of England. (I mean, if we are looking at this from a religious standpoint, the Prince of Wales does have a leg up on his brother!)
Or, perhaps Hugh, who is more removed from the royal family (he is King Charles III’s godson and a British aristocrat rather than a blood relative) will look to the brother who has now stepped back. Maybe the couple will seek a godfather who doesn’t have the weight of the commonwealth on his shoulders.
Will the brother who isn’t chosen view this as a snub? Will the mutual friend’s decision drive a further wedge between the King’s sons?
Or. Is there a world in which Baby Grosvenor has two (or more) royal godparents? We guess we will find out this summer.
