Supernatural ran for a whopping fifteen seasons, with the story of the Winchester brothers amassing a large fan following. The series was created by Eric Kripke, who served as the showrunner before departing after five seasons. However, Kripke could revisit the show’s world for the proposed revival that has frequently been discussed by the cast.

Instead of doing a traditional continuation in the form of season 16, the revival could instead follow Kripke’s original plan for the series. In an interview, the creator confirmed that he originally envisioned the concept as a movie. However, plans quickly changed, giving us the beloved long-running series. Nonetheless, a Supernatural movie makes a lot of sense now, and here is why.
Supernatural creator Eric Kripke originally envisioned the series as a movie
Eric Kripke created Supernatural, which went on to become one of the longest-running shows on television. It stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki as the Winchester brothers and follows their monster-hunting escapades.

The series concluded in 2020 after 15 seasons, but Kripke had intended for it to last only five installments. During an interview with Toledo Free Press, Kripke revealed the original plan was never to make a TV series at all.
Originally I wanted to do “Supernatural” as a movie, but this is as close to a dream project as I can get. It’s exciting to wake up every morning.
Kripke made the above comment, revealing that his original vision for the concept was to make it into a feature film.
However, the creator, who left the series after five seasons, admitted that there were more opportunities on television at the time, and Warner Bros was relatively patient with new shows. Hence, from a business perspective, it made sense to make the experimental concept into a series instead of a feature film.
Supernatural should return as a movie instead of season 16
What Kripke originally started with a five-season plan went on for fifteen seasons, covering nearly every trick in the playbook, and fans still cannot get enough of the Winchester brothers. As a result, lead stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki have often shown an interest in doing a revival of the series.

While Kripke will reunite Ackles, Padalecki, and Misha Collins on his other hit series, The Boys, with the latter two set to debut in yet-undisclosed roles in the final season, a proper Supernatural reunion cannot be far behind. However, given the lead pair’s busy schedule, it might not make sense to do a full-fledged season 16.
Instead, Kripke should revert to his original idea and give us a Supernatural movie, a cozy one-off adventure with the Winchesters that could also bring back popular cast member Mark Sheppard as Crowley, provided his earlier concerns with the makers are resolved.
Ultimately, a Supernatural movie with Sam, Dean, Castiel, and Crowley as the main characters would be the perfect throwback to the show’s early days of popularity that fans can get behind. Hence, Kripke needs to start working on it as soon as possible.
Supernatural is streaming on Netflix.
