The Old Mutual Education Trust (OMET) is now accepting applications for its 2026 Scholarship Programme. This scholarship is designed to support first-time undergraduate students—including those pursuing certificates, diplomas, or degree-level qualifications—who are union members, employees of participating trade unions, or their legal dependents or spouses.
Successful applicants can receive up to R70 000 in study-related expenses, along with additional support like a laptop, academic counselling, tutoring, and career readiness training.
Who Can Apply?
Applicants must fall into one of the following categories:
- A paid-up member of a participating trade union
- The spouse or child dependent (under 25) of a union member or employee
- A full-time permanent employee at one of the listed unions
- The spouse or child dependent of a full-time union employee
You must also:
- Be a South African citizen
- Be completing Matric in 2025, or have already completed Matric
- Be studying or intending to study at a public university in South Africa
- Be pursuing your first undergraduate qualification
- Have not applied for funding for short courses, postgraduate or second qualifications
Participating Trade Unions
The OMET scholarship is available to members and staff of the following unions:
- DENOSA
- NATU
- NEHAWU
- NUM
- PEU
- POPCRU
- SACCAWU
- SACWU
- SADTU
- SASBO
What the Scholarship Covers
✔ Up to R70 000 for study-related expenses
✔ A laptop
✔ Access to tutoring and academic counselling
✔ Career workshops, peer mentorship, and readiness training
✔ Opportunity for vacation work and internships
Selection Process
- Only 60 students will be selected.
- Selection will be based on academic merit and eligibility.
- Final interviews: 30 September – 2 October 2025
- Final approval: November 2025

Documents Required
- Certified ID of union member and applicant (within last 6 months)
- Union membership or employee number
- Grade 11 final & Matric mid-year results (if in Matric)
- Matric certificate (if already completed)
- 2024 year-end & 2025 mid-year academic results (if currently studying)
