“Not what most people would expect”: George R.R. Martin Maybe Wrong About His Game of Thrones Spinoff After What Happened to House of the Dragon

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be here soon, and George R.R. Martin confirmed that he has seen the whole of Season 1. The author expressed satisfaction with the upcoming spinoff series, which is based on the Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas.

With this update, fans expect it to match the level of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, but according to the author, it will be different and not what most fans imagine. Could this be a bad thing, then?

What fans need to know about George R.R. Martin’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

George R.R. Martin finally gave an update on the upcoming Game of Thrones spinoff series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and while it’s positive news, part of his statement revealed that a major change is happening.

In an interview with Collider, the author confirmed that Season 1 is already finished, and he’s happy with the result. While this sounds great, Martin warned that “they’re not what most people would expect in a fantasy story.”

So, if you’re expecting massive battles or dragon fights, then this show may not be for you. “It’s a little softer. It’s a little more humorous. I hope the audience will be open to that kind of change,” he said.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a massive shift from the tone of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. The new spinoff series is more contained and won’t have a lot of political wars, s*xually graphic scenes, or epic battles. The focus will be on the two main characters, Ser Duncan the Tall and Aegon V Targaryen.

It is too early to tell how fans will receive the show. While House of the Dragon hit high viewership, it failed to capture what made Game of Thrones so popular. Some of its biggest criticisms were its lack of action, underdeveloped characters, and deviation from the original show’s formula.

What’s certain is that the upcoming show will have a smaller audience as compared to the original and the prequel series. Quality-wise, it might be faithful to the novellas, hence Martin’s approval, but the lack of violence, gore, and intimate scenes may not appeal to some of the fans.

Where did House of the Dragon go wrong?

The second season of House of the Dragon became controversial not only because of the changes in the storyline but due to the lack of exciting scenes. It went in a different direction where there was less violence, less conflict between characters, and even fewer erotic scenes.

If these became a major concern for fans, what more for the upcoming show? It would probably feel very distant in terms of tone and overall vibe from the first two series. But who knows? It might find a solid fan base especially if the first season performed well. It would subsequently create more buzz that would encourage people to check it out.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set to premiere in late 2025.
