“No, I’m done”: Resurrecting Daenerys is Not the Answer But King Bran Stark Can Lead Game of Thrones into Season 9

Daenerys Targaryen’s final heel turn in Game of Thrones was not exactly what fans had in mind for the series finale, but nobody can change the past now. The show had a disappointing ending in season 8, with Daenerys dying and her body being taken away by Drogon and Bran Stark being named as King.

While the franchise currently has one spinoff show airing and several in various stages of development, a continuation of the series might be a stretch. Still, it is possible since George R.R. Martin has yet to complete his novels. Should a ninth season be commissioned, the series should stay away from resurrecting the Mother of Dragons.

Bran Stark’s reign can be explored well in Game of Thrones season 9 even without resurrecting Daenerys

In a surprising turn of events, Bran Stark was named king at the end of Game of Thrones. The character was important both in the books and in the show from the beginning as his crippling set many things in motion. His ability to see visions of the future as the three-eyed raven (and his ‘story’ apparently) made him a worthy candidate for the throne.

However, the issue is that there are no compelling antagonists for Bran Stark to fight against. Daenerys Targaryen has been killed by Jon Snow, and the threat of the White Walkers and Cersei Lannister are no longer there. Bran will be ruling in a relatively peaceful time, but there is no Game of Thrones without an impending war.

While the makers might use the opportunity to bring back Daenerys (they brought back Jon Snow), that might not be a good fix as the character has already undergone a complete arc (no matter how controversial). Moreover, actress Emilia Clarke is not keen on returning.

When asked about reprising the role in the now-canceled Jon Snow spinoff, she said to BBC,

[Kit Harrington] has told me about it. And I know it exists. It’s happening…[But] No, I think I’m done.

Bran Stark will probably have to deal with fresh threats, maybe internal or external, for a possible ninth season to be compelling. However, it is better to continue the franchise with prequels or spinoffs than an actual continuation of the flagship show.

Where is Daenerys Targaryen after Drogon took her body at the end of Game of Thrones?

Daenerys Targaryen’s final season was extremely controversial. After years of build-up to her being the rightful queen of the land, she immediately turns as mad as her father, the Mad King, and commits g*nocide on the population of King’s Landing in a fit of rage. The heel turn was not on anyone’s bingo card and was not received well by fans.

She is literally stabbed in the back by Jon Snow, and after her death, her dragon Drogon burns the Iron Throne and flies away with her corpse. Fans have long speculated where Drogon might have taken her and if there was a chance at resurrection.

Emilia Clarke said in the book Fire Cannot Kill a Dragon: Game of Thrones and the Official Untold Story of the Epic Series (via ScreenRant),

People have asked me about that a lot. It’s my tendency to be funny with it and say, ‘Oh, Hawaii.’ But honestly, if I’m really being very serious about the whole thing: I think he flies around with her body until it decomposes. I literally think he keeps flying until he can’t fly anymore. He just keeps grieving.

While Clarke’s answer is certainly artistic, fans have speculated that Drogon may have taken her to Volantis, where the Red Priestess Kinvara lives, thus giving room for a resurrection.

Game of Thrones is available to stream on Max.
