Netflix’s ‘Devil May Cry’ Features One of the Last Performances of Kevin Conroy We’ll Ever Be Privileged to See

Netflix is adapting Devil May Cry into an anime, and fans are actually really hyped up about it! This long-awaited anime version of Capcom’s legendary action video game is being released on April 3, 2025.

What makes it even more special is that it’ll feature one of the last performances of Kevin Conroy, the legendary voice of Batman in Batman: The Animated Series, and countless other DC projects. Conroy, who sadly passed away in November 2022 at 66, is gonna be voicing VP Baines, a new character introduced in this adaptation.

Kevin Conroy’s final performance in Devil May Cry anime: A last gift to fans

Kevin Conroy’s reputation as a voice actor is unparalleled. Best recognized for defining the voice of Batman for more than three decades, his deep, commanding tone became the gold standard for the character. Moreover, his influence on video games and animation cannot be measured, and his appearance in Devil May Cry serves as a bittersweet reminder of his extraordinary talent.

Recently Devil May Cry‘s producer, Adi Shankar wrote from his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, that Conroy’s performance had been recorded before his death and no artificial intelligence had been used to replicate his voice. He added:

Mr. Conroy gave it amazingly nuanced performance. It was both a pleasure and an honor to work with him.

Johnny Yong Bosch, who voices Dante, also paid tribute to Conroy:

It was an honor to work alongside Kevin Conroy for the upcoming DMC series. A true legend. Batman: The Animated Series redefined cartoons for me. For those wondering, our recording sessions took place a few years ago—animation takes quite some time to complete.

Conroy’s final work was previously heard in Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths: Part 3, where he reprised his role as Batman. Now, Devil May Cry gives fans another opportunity to appreciate his brilliance one last time.

Apart from Kevin Conroy’s posthumous role, and Johnny Yong Bosch as Dante, the series also boasts an impressive cast, with notable names such as Scout Taylor-Compton as Mary, Chris Coppola as Enzo, and Hoon Lee as White Rabbit.

The future of video game adaptations

With Netflix continuing to explore video game adaptations, Devil May Cry has the potential to set a new benchmark for how these stories are translated to screen. According to Netflix’s official synopsis, the series follows Dante, a demon hunter who’s an orphan and basically takes jobs for cash. He totally doesn’t realize he’s getting dragged into some crazy conflict that could mess up both the human and demon worlds.

There are some sketchy forces trying to open a portal between these two realms, and guess what? Dante’s the only dude who can put a stop to it. The anime adaptation promises to deliver some seriously hardcore action, awesome fights, and that old-school feel we all adore from Devil May Cry.

Moreover, the project is spearheaded by Adi Shankar, the producer behind Netflix’s critically acclaimed Castlevania adaptation. Shankar has also been attached to an Assassin’s Creed adaptation since 2017, though there’s been little news on its progress.

Whether or not that series comes to fruition, Devil May Cry is shaping up to be another major milestone in his career. And here’s more surprises for you! Studio Mir, the South Korean studio that worked on The Legend of Korra, Voltron: Legendary Defender, and most recently X-Men ’97, is doing the animation for Devil May Cry.

They’re literally known for having smooth animation and actually caring about the little things, so you can bet your bottom dollar that Devil May Cry is gonna be looking amazing, just like the game. With Adi Shankar involved, a good cast, and a studio that’s capable, fans are completely thrilled that this adaptation will remain faithful to the original. Let the demon hunting begin!

Devil May Cry will be available to watch on Netflix, once released on April 3, 2025.
