‘National treasure’ Charlie O’Leary is ‘sharp as a tack’ hail fans as Ireland legend ‘ends a few marriages’ on Late Late


IRELAND fans hailed legendary kitman Charlie O’Leary as a “national treasure” following his appearance on the Late Late Show.

The 101-year-old appeared alongside a host of heroes from the 1990 World Cup to commemorate that historic summer.

And he stole the show in the eyes of fans as he put the players on blast in the best possible way.

Asked about his memories of legendary manager Jack Charlton, O’Leary instead poked fun at the Englishman.

He revealed: “Wonderful memories. A marvelous man altogether.

“The thing that we hate talking about is he hated paying out money. Famous story about him is – do you know about the English coin? The 50p coin or so?

“He let one fall one day and on the way down it hit him on the back of the neck.”

The former players were not free from his wit.

He added: “Every one of them were minding themselves going out. They were married men. The memories often faded after that.”

Both stories left the studio and the players in fits of laughter, and led to fans paying tribute to the beloved icon.
