If you’re preparing to write your final matric exams in 2025, understanding the NSC pass requirements is essential. These requirements determine whether you qualify for a Higher Certificate, Diploma, or Bachelor’s Degree pass – which directly impacts your admission into universities, colleges, or training institutions.
Here’s a full breakdown of what you need to achieve in your seven subjects to earn each pass endorsement.
What You Need to Pass Matric in 2025
To pass matric, you must meet minimum promotion and certification requirements for one of the following endorsements:
1. Higher Certificate Pass
Minimum requirement to apply for a Higher Certificate programme at a college or institution.
- Pass 6 of your 7 subjects
- Home Language: 40% (Compulsory)
- Two other subjects: 40%
- Three subjects: 30%
- Language of Learning and Teaching (LOLT): At least 30%
This pass allows you to study towards a Higher Certificate qualification (NQF Level 5) at a college or other post-school institution.
2. Diploma Pass
Minimum requirement to apply for a Diploma course at a university or university of technology.
- Pass 6 of your 7 subjects
- Home Language: 40% (Compulsory)
- At least four subjects: 40% (Level 3)
- Life Orientation is excluded
- Language of Learning and Teaching (LOLT): At least 30%
A Diploma pass gives you access to diploma programmes such as National Diplomas in Education, Business, Engineering, and more.

- You now need a minimum of four subjects with 50% or more, excluding Life Orientation, for Bachelor’s admission.
- A Bachelor’s pass does not guarantee university admission – institutions may have additional requirements.
