Luas derailed after rocks ‘deliberately’ placed on track as gardai launch major probe into ‘serious safety incident’

GARDAI have launched an investigation after a “serious” incident in which a Luas was partially derailed.

The shock incident occurred on the Red Line between the Red Cow and Kingswood on Thursday night, March 6.

It is alleged that rocks were “deliberately” placed on the tracks near Ballymount Gatehouse.

Gardai received a report of the partially derailed rail vehicle at 9.10pm on the night of March 6.

A technical examination of the scene was carried out by the Divisional Scenes of Crime Unit.

In a statement a Garda spokesperson said: “Gardai are investigating an incident of endangering traffic in the Ballymount area, Dublin 24 on Thursday night, 6th March 2025.

“Gardai received a report of a light rail transit vehicle that had partially derailed at approximately 9:10pm.

“No injuries were reported.

“A technical examination by the Divisional Scenes of Crime Unit was conducted.”

And they added: “Investigations are ongoing.”

DublinLive report that a letter was sent to local residents from Transdev, who operate Dublin’s Luas light rail system, following the incident.

The letter also alleges that this is not the first time such an incident has occurred.

In the letter the incident was blasted as a “reckless act” that posed a “severe risk” to the public.

The letter reads: “We wish to bring to your attention a serious safety incident that occurred on the Luas Red Line near your residence on Thursday night, March 6, 2025.

“Rocks were deliberately placed on the tracks between the Red Cow and Kingswood stops, near Ballymount Gatehouse.

‘RECKLESS ACT’

“This reckless act posed a severe risk of derailing a tram, endangering passengers and staff, and disrupting the entire Red Line service. Unfortunately, this is not the first occurrence of such an incident.

“At Luas, the safety of our customers, staff, and services is our top priority.

“We are actively working with An Garda Siochana, South Dublin County Council, and other agencies to stop these dangerous activities and ensure the continued safe operation of the Luas network.”

And in appeal to locals they asked for any anti-social behaviour to be reported.

They added: “We are asking residents – If you witness any anti-social behaviour or suspect similar activity may be planned, please report it immediately.”
