‘Local community very saddened’ after man, 60s, killed in two-vehicle Westmeath collision named as American tourist

THE man killed in a Westmeath collision earlier this week has been named as an American tourist.

Christopher Dedera, 60s, was killed in the two-vehicle road collision near Ballinalack on Wednesday, July 9.

Christopher, who is from Texas in the US, was rushed to Midlands Regional Hospital, Mullingar, where he later died from his injuries.

It is believed that one line of inquiry is that Mr Dedera may have had a medical episode while driving.

Paying tribute Councillor Paul Hogan said: “The local community are very saddened at this tragedy.

“I want to praise the emergency services who attended the scene.

“All our thoughts and prayers are with everyone concerned.”

Sinn Fein Councillor David Jones said: “My condolences go to the man’s friends and family at this sad time.

“It’s always an unfortunate situation when you hear of another road traffic incident.

“This highlights the fact that the N4 is in bad need of an upgrade, and this can’t come quickly enough.”

Funeral arrangements for the Texas man have yet to be made.

Gardai are continuing to appeal for witnesses to the collision.

A Garda spokesperson said on Wednesday: “Gardai and emergency services attended the scene of a fatal two-vehicle road traffic collision on the N4 at Ballinalack, Co Westmeath on Wednesday 9th July 2025.

“The incident, which involved two cars, occurred at approximately 4.20 pm.

“The road is currently closed for a technical examination by Forensic Collision Investigators, and local diversions are in place.”
