‘Like a warzone’ – Dublin beach cleaners reveal items left behind after heatwave crowds and people are ‘sick’

DUBLIN beach cleaners have revealed the trail of destruction left behind after temperatures reached a scorching 31.1C over the weekend.

There was fury as shocking pics showed the items that were left behind on Sandycove Beach near Dún Laoghaire yesterday.

Ireland has waved goodbye to its record-setting heatwave as heavy downpours or showers look set to continue into next week.

But weather experts said that Ireland will still experience somewhat warm temperatures in the coming days with highs of 23°C expected.

The weekend started with extreme heat with highs of 31.1°C – but it wasn’t long before thundery downpours made an appearance today.

And there is plenty more on the cards as Met Éireann forecasts unsettled conditions, with showers or longer spells of rain, looking set to persist through to the end of the week and into next weekend.

But there is more sunshine expected this summer with above average temperatures and potentially drier conditions in the second half of July.

And Ireland is “highly likely” to have a warmer-than-average summer, according to Met Éireann.

Sandycove Beach near Dún Laoghaire, Co Dublin was one of the worst hit areas as empty booze bottles, towels, a buggy, sheets, a beach tent, a nappy, ladies’ ‘thong’, kids’ beach toys and even a bag of cocaine were left along the coast.

Flossie And The Beach Cleaners took to social media to share the result of their clean-up yesterday.

They wrote on Facebook: “And that’s a wrap for the hottest weekend this year on Sandycove Beach.

“Vague breakdown for Sunday: 1 bag of cocaine, 15 towels, 1 buggy, 28 cans, 12 glass bottles, 2 sheets, 1 beach tent, Nappy, Ladies ‘thong,’ Kids beach toys.

“So we have rain on and off for the week ahead.”

Flossie And The Beach Cleaners took to the comment section to express their concerns.

One said: “Thank you, you did a great job!

“But looking at what they left behind, we have to recognise that sometimes, humanity is unable to distinguish itself from other animals.”

Someone else added: “Oh dear God…. like a war zone!!!! Thank you all so much.”

A third wrote: “That’s absolutely disgusting a child could have taken that [cocaine bag]. I’m sick.”

A fourth said: “That is both wonderful, that you cleaned all that up THANK YOU! And incredibly depressing that people behave in this way.

An average of 20kg of waste is collected at each beach clean-up, according to Flossie And The Beach Cleaners.
