Katey Sagal grew up in a Hollywood family and her kids have since kicked off their own careers in the family business.
When the sitcom star decided to get her start in the entertainment business, acting wasn’t in the cards.
“I was just going to be a songwriter and a musician, and I had some pretty good success along the line,” she said during a March 2025 interview on the “MeSsy” podcast. “That’s how I identified myself, did not want to be an actor, never wanted to be an actor, because it’s the family I came from.”
Eventually, Sagal got bit by the acting bug. She’s starred in several major series over the years, including Married … With Children, Sons of Anarchy and The Connors, among others. Throughout her career, Sagal carried on her family’s legacy with children who have also kicked off acting and singing careers.

Sara Macon
Katey’s mom was named Sara Zwilling, who went by the stage name Sara Macon, she was a singer, writer and producer. She and Katey’s father, Boris Sagal, welcomed five children during their marriage. Macon died of heart disease in 1975.
Boris Sagal
Katey’s father stayed behind the camera for the duration of his career, working as director. Following Sara’s death, he married Marge Champion in 1977. Boris died in 1981 during an on set accident taking place during the production of a miniseries titled World War III.
David Sagal
The actress’ older brother did not go into Hollywood, and is a lawyer who married actress McNally Sagal.
Jean and Liz Sagal
The twins are Katey’s younger sisters who starred on the series Double Trouble, which aired from 1984 to 1985. Both continued to have successful acting careers over the years, with appearances in several TV shows and movies. Jean has also taken up directing while Liz has focused on writing.
Joey Sagal
Katey’s younger brother is also an actor, having starred in several movies over the years. He famously originated the part of The Visitor in Steve Martin‘s Picasso at the Lapin Agile.

The actress married her first husband in the late 1970s and by 1981 they split.
Jack White
Katey married the drummer in 1993, and they welcomed two kids throughout their relationship — Sarah in 1994 and Jackson in 1996. They divorced in 2000.

Her first daughter was born in August 1994 and, similarly to her mom, is both an actress and singer.

Katey’s son, Jackson, was born in March 1996. He is also a musician but is most known for his acting roles. He’s been playing the role of Stephen DeMarco on Tell Me Lies since 2022.
Kurt Sutter
Katey married actor, writer and producer Sutter, who created Sons of Anarchy, in October 2004. Their daughter, Esme, was born via surrogate in 2007.
