Kaizer Chiefs collect R15 million, but were they taken for a p*#s?

Kaizer Chiefs will need to balance the books by selling some stars as their incoming recruitment drive continues apace.

Skipper Yusuf Maart is close to completing a move to the Austrian Bundesliga with SV Ried.

Is R15 million a fair price for a quality operator of Maart’s calibre?

Maart leaves Kaizer Chiefs for Austria

Central midfielder Yusuf Maart, a senior and well-respected member of the Kaizer Chiefs squad, is taking his opportunity to move to Europe just before his 30th birthday. The industrious midfield man is said to be making the switch to Austrian Bundesliga side SV Ried for a fee in the region of €725k (R15 million). That might sound like a decent figure for the club, but let’s do a quick projection exercise. Let’s assume SV Ried keeps Maart for a year and then opts to sell him to a much wealthier club. What sort of fee could they attract? At least triple what they paid Chiefs for his services? Do European clubs have any respect for football teams in South Africa?

Mofokeng is the gold standard in South Africa

Another hypothetical example involves Orlando Pirates star Relebohile Mofokeng. At 20 years old, he’s the jewel in the Pirates’ crown. There’s talk that the Sea Robbers will listen to offers of R32 million for the winger. Make no mistake, Rele Mofokeng is a brilliant player, potentially the South African with the highest ceiling. What message does this send to European clubs wanting to smuggle South African talent if Mofokeng signs for a team in Spain, Italy, France or Germany and then gets sold for roughly five times that number? Is South Africa a sweatshop?

Zajmovic is available, will Chiefs pounce?

30-year-old Bosnian Dzenan Zajmovic bagged seven goals and two assists in the league last season, as well as three goals from two Nedbank Cup outings. The country’s big clubs could be interested in signing the Belgium-born star on a free transfer this winter.
