Kaizer Chiefs appoint new captain after Maart’s departure

With Yusuf Maart poised to sign for Austrian outfit SV Ried, Kaizer Chiefs appear to have already named their new captain.

Maart, 29, did not join his teammates during their pre-season camp in the Netherlands. The Amakhosi midfielder scored the winning goal in the Nedbank Cup final to give Chiefs their first trophy in 10 years.

It was reported that the former Sekhukhune captain signed a new contract with the Glamour Boys last month, only to decide to move a few weeks later.

Who is the new Kaizer Chiefs captain?

In the three matches Amakhosi played in the Netherlands, Miguel Inacio has worn the armband. The Angolan international has stepped in as captain in the absence of Maart last season. Nasreddine Nabi has been impressed with Miguel’s organization, leadership, and ability to read play.

The only downfall is that the Angolan international has a knack for getting unnecessary yellow cards. He is definitely the best candidate to captain Kaizer Chiefs this coming season.

The club has not officially confirmed him as their new skipper, but given he started all pre-season matches wearing the armband, it’s pretty evident that Miguel will replace Maart as captain.

Amakhosi lost their key player in the midfield

Thabo Cele is another strong candidate to take over the armband. The 28-year-old midfielder has shown leadership since he joined the team in January. If Nabi decide to take the armband from Miguel, Cele is more likely to be the next Kaizer Chiefs captain.

Amakhosi are in the Netherlands for their pre-season but should return to the country later this week.

Is Miguel the right man to lead Chiefs?
